Bad sector

Thread needs solution

Running a full backup and got this error: Failed to read data from the disk.
Details: Failed to read from sector '185,904,608' of hard disk '1'

if i clone the disk will it copy the bad sector?

It's a crap shoot.  The disk either has a locked file (are you taking yoru full backup from within Windows or from offline bootable recovery media) or a bad sector. However, if there is no data at that location, no, it wont' transfer a bad sector to the new disk.  I'd recommend trying to create your backup witih the offline media, but before that, you should probably run chkdsk /F /R from an elevated command prompt on that disk and it will try to find and repair bad sectors or mark them as bad so it moves data from it and/or won't try to write anything else there if it can't be repaired.

If that doesn't help, then try taking a full disk image (all paritions) with the offline media and saving that to another drive.  Then, instead of cloning, remove the original, but your replacement drive in its place and restore the full image to the new drive and see how it goes.  The bad sector should not get copied over, but if the data in that sector is bad and/or corrupted, that may carry over in either a clone or a disk image restoral.

thanks Bobbo_3COX1.  This is the 2nd time this has happened and did run chkdsk thru the drive properties, tools and Check.  able to do at least a full backup after running chkdsk before and now it is happening again, so will try to do the offline media option.  good thing, I have a couple of hard disks laying around.

Yes it is good you have spares as the current one needs to be retired.
