Unable to Backup VMware Templates

Thread needs solution

I am trying to backup some Virtual Machines and some virtual machine templates that reside on our 3-host VMware setup (esxi 6.0.0.3247720). All hosts are licensed. I understand that the ABAdvanced for VMware allows this. Correct?

I am trying to backup a single machine template to our local storage node.  I'd like to get to the point of backing up all of our vm's and templates.

I've tried this with the auto-deployed appliance and with having the appliance already deployed and running.

The error I am getting is this:

Failed to execute the command.

Hi Dee,

The problem is not related to the type of the source you're backing up (VM templates in your case). It's about licensing specifics and according to the error message it may come because you're backing up to a centralized vault (on Acronis Storage Node) which has deduplication enabled, while license does not allow this. To localize the problem it makes sense to try to back up to some plain network share (not to a centralized vault). If it succeeds then the problem is definitely related to improper licenses usage and you should contact our support team for assistance (Acronis Backup Advanced for VMware license must support backing up to deduplication-enabled vaults). If there is still the same problem then probably the license has not been correctly assigned to the hosts. You should check the "Change License" screen when viewing the list of "All machines with agents" where you should see your virtual appliances listed and confirm that licenses are assigned to proper hosts: 1 license for each host.

See attached screen shot example - here I have Acronis Backup Windows Agent for VMware installed which is connected to vCenter with 3 hosts and the license is captured for 1 host (10.250.73.19) automatically after I've run backup of a VM from it. The license is not yet bind to 10.250.216.14 and will be bind only after backup attempt. If this doesn't help then please contact our support team for further assistance.

Thank you.

Thank you for your response.  however, these are not active machines and most all of them are VMware templates.  They are either offline and thus the Acronis Agent is unreachable, or the machine is a linux-variant and does not have the agent installed, or they are stored VMware templates.

There is no installed agent to click on.

Also, the machines would be listed on the left hand side of AMS screen, in the "Virtual Machines" subtree, and you can drill down in to the vmware Production environment to see all machines that are hosted in the vmware hosted environment.

I have 3 host acronis appliances deployed, one for each of my vmware hosts.  They do show up in AMS when I right-click on the "virtual machines" subtree and select any option involving the ".... Agent for VMware".

Weirdly, I am now getting this error when I try to back up a single vmware template using "backup now"... ... Storing the backup job to a storage node's vault.

The virtual appliances which are connected to your vSphere environment must appear under "Machines with Agents" section and that's where you should check the licensing assignment (as shown on my previously attached screen shot). The last error message looks like you tried to use disk inclusion rules while backing up the template. I'd strongly recommended contacting our support team for assistance - it looks like there is misconfiguration of Acronis Backup in your particular setup, but it's hard to say anything definite without taking a look at the environment (how the backup tasks are configured, i.e. what's selected as source for backup, what are the backup options, how the appliances are configured, how exactly the backup vault is configured, etc.)

Thank you.

Oh I see.  That seems strange since it is the Acronis Management Console that is deploying the Vmware Applicance on to the hosts.  The license should carry over.  It already registers the vmware appliance..

Anyway, I clicked #1 and found my vmware Applicance at #2. At #3 I clicked Change License.  I see on the License Page that it is NOT licensed, however it is licensed for "cloud".  Clicking #4 to determine a license.  Clicking #5 to select the licesne brings up nothing at all.  So I click on #6 to add the licences that we do have.  I then get an error :

Module: trueimg_remote_full_vs_44184
Message: Failed to add the license key.

Code: 18,022,418(0x01130012)
LineInfo: 0x28D66C321428C874;

LineInfo: 0xA3ECC28793B8600;

Message: The license is already imported to the license server.

I guess I need to call Acronis again. Something does look to be screwed up.

Ok, I figured out the licensing issue and my Appliance Agents are now licensed to my hosts.  However, I am still getting the same error I got before:

(I'm selecting the vmware template under the tree: Acronis\ Virtual Machines\ All Virtual Machines .  I then right click and select 'Backup Now' )

Failed to execute the command.

Hi,

The last particular error may appear when the backup plan contains a path to backed up resource (VM in your case) which is no longer valid, for example due to resource migration (vMotion of a VM at the time when there was no vCenter connection from Acronis Backup agents). You can try re-adding the particular VM into the backup plan or re-create the backup plan. First of all try backing up entire VMs rather than using any special disk inclusion/exclusion rules and once it works then you can adjust the backup source selection (back up only 1st disk for example).

P.S. Internal issue ID in our tracking system which describes very similar issue: TTASK-9796

Thank you.

We have 3 hosts and 3 of the acronis vmware agent appliances that are not bound to any virtual machine.  And these are templates so they do not migrate anyway.

Thank you for trying to assist.
