CPU power being "gobbled up"
Windows 7 and True Image Home 2010 6053
For the past few weeks I've been having a Windows Service program 'gobble up' 25% and more of available CPU usage. This service is WmiPrvSE.exe located in C:\Windows\System32\wbem.
I have spent hours trying to find the cause - adding and removing Services via msconfig. The only time this service appears in Task Manager is when Acronis True Image Home is activated or Adobe Switchboard and Flexnet. With the latter two, this service appears and after a few minutes disappears.
I then activated Acronis Drive Monitor and Acronis Scheduler2 (Drive Monitor won't work without it) and this Service re-appeared and gobbled up the usual 20% to 30%. I de-activated them and rebooted. My problem has disappeared!
I have now lost my System Backup facility! HELP!
I suspect something must have happened on my PC, because I've been running True Image Home 2010 6053 since December 2009 with no problems.

I've paid for technical support and it was eventually decided I must have an installation problem, so I uninstalled True Image Home 2010, deleted Acronis Secure Zone and, at the recommendation of the technician, uninstalled Genie-Soft TimeLine 2 backup.
I then re-installed the latest build of True Image Home 2010, and kept my fingers crossed. Folowing a reboot, my problem with WmiPrvSE.exe appeared to have disappeared. I recreated Acronis Secure Zone, ran a backup and left everything to tick over. No problems!
After about half-an-hour, I decided to install Acronis Disk Monitor (which I'd also uninstalled). Immediately my old problem with the service program re-appeared, only worse - now using upto 50% CPU. So I uninstalled Acronis Drive Monitor, and the CPU usage problem went away.
Obviously, Acronis True Image Home 2010 is highly susceptible to incompatible programs. It is only a matter of discovering which!

David,
Do you have PerfectDisk 11 installed or Eset Firewall?
I had a similar problem to yours after an update to the Firewall engine and during a trial with PD11.
The problem disappeared once I had upgraded TI2010 to 7046 AND ABR10 to the current version.
Is your Windows the 64bit version?
This didn't happen on my 32 bit version of W7 or XPpro 32 bit.
Windows 7 encapsulates many programs that access the net and other lower processes into WmiPrv service and Service Host.
Installing and running Process Explorer from Microsofts SysInternals suite will track down how each program is interacting with each other.

Thanks Colin
Windows 7 32 bit home Premium. I've nothing like that installed. At one point I thought it might be McAfee Internet Security, because when I ran "Process Explorer" the very top entry was svhost with McAfee Site Agent below it followed by COM?? and WmiPrvSE.exe.
I uninstalled McAfee including the removal tool, installed Kaspersky and tried again, but although Process Explorer showed different results, the CPU usage was still being grabbed by WmiPrvSE.exe.
Everything running OK now, but if you any other ideas I would be interested.
Thanks
david

Hello David and Colin!
Colin, thank you for your reasonable assistance!
David, welcome to our Forum and thank you for finding time to report about the issue. I'va carefully searched through our internal resources and didn't find any mention of a known issue of such type, so this situation requires investigation.
The wmiprvse.exe file is otherwise known as Windows Management Instrumentation. It is a Microsoft Windows-based component that provides control and information about management in an enterprise environment. We do work with it, but currently are trying to modify the source code in order not to communicate with this particular process. In order to provide you with an appropriate solution we will need to localise the reason of the issue. Could you please provide us with the following information?
- Acronis Info from the machine in question
- Screenshots of the Task Manager
- Report of the processes. Download Windows Procexp Tool, run it and either make the export of the list or screenshot.
After that send this information via PM to me, and I will forward it to the Experts team. They will analyze the data and fnd a solution.
Should you need anything else or have any further questions - feel free to contact us at your earliest convenience, we will be happy to help you!

Dear David!
I have jus received some update from Testers team. They've managed to reproduce the issue and forwarded this information to the Development team. Currently they are searching for the reason of the problem, and it looks like it is caused by some interaction with Event Logs. Is it possible to ask you to perform the following actions?
- Start -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Unfold Windows logs
- You will see a few items (aaplication, security, system, setup, forwarded events). Make Right-Click on Application and System -> Clear the log
After that please check whether the issue persists. This information will help us to localise the issue.
Let me know in case you have any concerns or questions!
Thank you once again for cooperation and patience.
