"Failed to initiate the snapshot manager library" - nothing on this error for 2016

Thread needs solution

The error I'm getting is "Failed to open (initialize) the computer" followed by the sentence in the title.

The only documentation I can find for this error is for Acronis True Image 2012 and 2013. On that page there are download links for SNAP files but since they are so old, they are useless.

What should I do?

(And you really need to lock out that spammer and delete a ton of spam posts!)

Hello Marcia, this sounds like it might be a Windows VSS (Volume Shadow Service) issue but without seeing the full log file from the failing task it is difficult to be more certain.

You can try disabling the Windows Volume Shadow Copy service and retrying the backup task to see if that allows it to run without the snapshot error message.

Well, there was a software update today. After it was completed, I tried again, and got a different error:

"The backup has failed. Please close the application that may currently use the file: \\[network computer name]\o\Laptop Backups\[backup name]"

No other program is using that file or even the O drive. It IS on another computer on my home network.

HOWEVER, it appears that the problem is related to the destination being on a wireless network drive. Since I have plenty of room on the laptop's own hard drive, I set up a test backup, choosing a single folder for the source and setting up a separate directory on the C drive for the backup.

It is running. Taking FOREVER, but running. The folder I chose at random turned out to be over 2 GB, and after more than an hour, the progress shows only 717MB backed up. I should've picked a smaller folder for the test.

If you have any insights about the problem with using a network drive, please share for my future use. In any event, I know I can disconnect the external drive I was trying to use from the PC and attach it to the laptop to do a full backup of the laptop... although that requires muscling my way to the back of the tower, which is a right royal pain. Is your network drive mapped or shared?

Acronis products much prefer to work with UNC entries rather than mapped drives. 

With the drive being on another PC as well, and wirless, there are a lot of other reasons it may not be accessible either.

1) Is the other system sleeping/hibernating

2) What advanced power settings are on the drive and the NIC for the remote system - USB suspend and power saving for NIC's / wireless is often turned on with the default power options

3) Computer management >>> device manager   also has power managment settings for devices like USB, disks and Nic's.  If the system is hosting remote shares, you want to disable these power management features.

4) Wireless can be its own ball of wax - may want to try a hard wired cable on both systems while trouble shoooting

5) Can you get to the O: drive and modify contents there form the remote machine outside of Acronis - homegroup changes, account password changes, switchign from a local account to a Microsoft account, etc can impact file permissions.

6) Have you renamed the remote PC or the remote shares?   

7) When was the last time both systems were rebooted - windows patches/updates can stop background services needed for remote access on one or both systems.
