Acronis TI 2016 "The last backup has been stopped by user"

Thread needs solution

Hi,

i am using Acronis True Image 2016 on Windows 10.

I have a NAS mounted as Drive M:\ and F:\ to the WIN Pc. The NAS is also accessible via FTP (to backup)

So what am i doing:

I am trying to create a Backup of drive F:\ on the WIN PC , which should be sent to the FTP.

I get the error message: "The last backup has been stopped by user" - i promise, i did not stop anything.

Funny thing:

i created a backup for M: (the identical way) some time ago, that worked like a charme.

F-Backup is using same FTP Credentials like M-Backup does , shoudlnt be a problem since it is ftp.

The Network shares are mounted with the same user and have the identical (RW) permissions set (i can work on both drives withoud any issues !)

Any idea on what is going wrong here?

Mike, please download a copy of the Log File Viewer app  from this forum and use this to look at the actual log file messages for the backup task that is giving you the 'stopped by user' error message.  This may reveal some more details to help in understanding what is actually happening with the backup task.

If the NAS or connection to it drops in anyway, it may prvent the backup form running - is this a wired/or wireless NAS connection - please use a wired one for testing to rule out wireless issus.

If the NAS account has changed in anyway, the stored credentials in Acronis may no longer be valid.  You can try forcing the credentials to be entered again after applying the following registry modification:  https://forum.acronis.com/forum/112041#comment-334760

You may also want to go into Windows Credential Manager (from control panel) and delete any existing "saved" credentials for the NAS/FTP connection and recreate them again in Windows.

If none of that helps, try creating a new backup to the same share - verify the credentials supplied are correct, test the connection in Acronis, then start a backup and see if it completes or not.

One last thought/note - what kind of NAS are you using? Some of the home NAS are very short on memory and CPU.  During large backups, they may run out of local resources.  This can be worsened by multiple connectoins to the NAS at teh same time (multiple systems backing up to it, sharing media from it to devices like tablets, other computers, media devices on your network).  Wireless connectivity can also lead to droppd packets that may prevent backups across the network from being successful.

Logs in Acronis are a good place to start, but there are a lot of other variables in your network setup, credentials and permissions (Windows, NAS and Acronis), connection type, NAS resources, etc. that make it more difficult to troubleshoot.

Hi Steve and Bobbo,

thanks for your hints.

Let me answer Bobbo's questions first:

- i am using a wired connecting (Gbit ethernet and adaequate cabling of course)

- no change of the NAS account in the last 4 month, acronis came in 2 months ago

- i already cleaned up the credentials - didn't bring any effort to my problem

- My NAS is a QNAP TS653A - should have enough RAM for a lot of fun - even i don'T see any issues regarding NAS performance in the NAS logs :(

So , thanks Steve for the Logfile Viewer .- here is what i got:

i do not get it - :(

Mike, thanks for the log details, I see one obvious problem in each log.

message=Failed to create snapshot for backup.; line_tag=0x616AD0806A6302A6

message=Erstellen des Snapshots für das Backup fehlgeschlagen.

This suggests that you are hitting a VSS problem where it is not able to create a snapshot of the system files in order to proceed with the backup task - this could be caused by a number of different things such as a lack of free space on the OS drive, a OS error etc.

See post https://forum.acronis.com/forum/45832#comment-346558 for how to disable VSS in your backup task script and then try running it again using Acronis's own snapshot utility.

You should be able to identify the task script from the above log file contents:

task=8ABB584A-13B0-4E74-A027-E12BAB8D2985task_name=FOTO_BCK where the task= the script ID.

task=93F83954-6BD5-41F6-98D2-D1EF10FF2FACtask_name=FOTOS_BCK

task=4518C9BE-595C-490C-AE94-BF81CC8DD18Ftask_name=MIYW_BCK

Thanks Steve,

i tried that,  (now bck starts ) but now i am getting the following message:

Failed to Backup file or folder: \\192.168.0.10\fotos\ with a list of options (Retry / Ignore / Ignore All / Cancel) no matter what i press - it "stops" with 6kB size and tells me he finished correctly :D

Sorry for the  german text's i already switchted acronis to english but i guess it likes german better :D

Mike, you are still getting the initial snapshot error message even though it is now going past that point and trying to read files to backup.

id=6;  date/time=21.04.2016 10:16:32;  message=Failed to create snapshot for backup.

message=Failed to back up file or folder '\\192.168.0.10\fotos\'. Error occurred while opening the file. (0x40007) function = FindFirstFileW,

I read that as saying that it cannot find a copy of the file in the snapshot volume shadow copy because of the previous error.

What is strange here is that in your earlier log files, you get the same snapshot error for all three backup tasks, yet your MIYW_BCK task concludes with:

message=The following backups have been successfully created: ftp://192.168.0.10:21/miyw_backup/miyw/MIYW_BCK_inc_b1_s3_v1.tib

This makes me wonder if the issue is more to do with your source drive for the Fotos share?

Create Backup Archive From: \\192.168.0.10\fotos\ - where this is the common factor between the two failing backup tasks?

Are you able to try a different backup to test if you see the same error messages and whether you get a success or failure?

Hey Steve,

i just had the miyw Backup running (same NAS, same type of share - no difference) - worked like a charme :/

Mike, is there a significant difference in size between the MIYW and FOTOS backup source folder sizes?

Mike, thanks, that probably has more to do with this issue - a 10 x larger size of data.  Are you able to try to subset the Fotos data at all and try the backup with say half the size?

Mike,

How much bandwidth do you get while transfering the backup to your NAS?  Open Windows Task Manager to check this.

How many physical disks are in your NAS?

What type of RAID are you using, 0, 1, 5, 10?

How ling does the 136GB backup run before it stops?

Steve, sure i will try ! (keep you posted)

@Enchantech:

- i can transfer around 100MB/s (trunked Gbit Port)

- The NAS has 6 disks in a RAID6 array

- The backup takes about 2 secs (referring to the above logs)

cheers

Mike

I would suspect data corruption of the source data.  Having the backup terminate in 1 or 2 seconds is certianly more than a network issue.

I can say that there have been cases where the app just did not like writing to a mapped drive so that may be something to look at.

You should run chkdsk without any switches and see if that reports any errors found.

@Steve when i try a smaller subset of the folder i am getting another error :

see the "new" logfile:

ok - just played around a little and changed the destination to a local disk - without any effort ...

i am going to RE - Setup the SHARE now and see if that will work ;&

i really don't get it .-...

renamed the __RAW to RAW (was just a guess - that the double _ could cause somes trouble - no success as well !)

Mike, well done for perservering with this issue.

The snapshot error looks to have gone and isn't being reported in the logs now, but you are still getting:

File or folder '\\192.168.0.10\fotos_tmp\___RAW\2016\' cannot be found.

which still suggests that this is a network connection problem.

See KB document for troubleshooting network connection issues  and also post about clearing out stored network credentials from the registry for ATIH.

Ditto on Steve's recommendation.

Mike,

Please verify you are using the latest build - 6559.  If not, you should download and perform a clean install using the cleanup tool listed in Steve's signature block.

I agree with Steve's (and Enchantech's) recommendation regarding network credentials.

I have spent a couple of hours trying to duplicate the error messages you have been getting.  I was able to generate a snapshot error with a successful backup when the user only had read permission in the source folder.

I originally thought the read errors were caused by permissions.  However, I was unable to duplicate the error messages.  When I set up the task and then changed the NAS login, here's the log:

When I turned the NAS off...here's the log:

I don't know if this helps or not.

ok guys, thanks for you help

even when i 100% was at the latest version, i tried  the following:

- i just removed acronis completely - along with steve's tool in his footer.

- i cleaned up the credentials in the registry

- re-installed Acronis (fresh an clean download from the Acronis page)

- - setup the backup for Fots ...

just backing up Photos !!!

Thanks so much for your help guys !!! really love the tech guys here in this forum !!!

cheers

Mike

wahahaha ok - created a second backup from NAS to FTP

same error's again - even after Resetup.

Since i created foto's first and Miyw second - now miyw breaks (wich did perfectly in the first time !!! )

hahahhaa <-- getting crazy now :(

Mike,

Maybe Iam missing something here, not sure.  First, you create a backup from PC to NAS, you get that working I think.  Now you create a second backup from NAS to FTP?  So you are backing up a backup?

Two things here, one, each backup task that you configure in the GUI needs to have a unigue/different name and should be in a unigue/different named folder.  If you are making changes to existing tasks to change destination locations stop doing that as thiat action corrupts the task database archive.

Two, you need to know that backup to FTP has a size limitation of 2GB.  This means that backups larger than 2GB will be broken up into 2GB chunks during creation.  You may not desire this, not sure.

Hey Enchantech,

no i created NAS -> FTP  (share fotos) --> worked

added NAS -> FTP (share miyw) --> failed

but now i created a backup:

NAS -> FTP (all shares together !!!) --> works ...

so i am now fine

sure i gave everything an uniqe name - but that did not matter :(

An yep - i saw 2 GB files being created on FTP share - fine for me !!

Well since i added all stuff in one backup - it now works !!

why it did not work for separate Backups ... i cant say - but now i am fine ... having everything in one backup is not what i wanted at first , but now i want a backup more than specificying different backup schedules for different shares :D

cheers

Mike

Mike,

Thanks for the clarification.  I think that you should be able to create separate shares (FTP) like you wanted to and have that work.  Not sure why it isn't.

If you would, please submit feedback to the Support team on this issue.  You can do so from within the Windows installed True Image app.  Just look on the left side of the GUI for the Open Book icon (Help Option), click there to open and select Feedback.  Give a brief description of the issue, that you are not able to create more than 1 FTP backup share, attach all log files you have, and reference or link to this Forum thread then Submit.

I am thinking that it may be necessary that unigue credentials must be created for each such FTP share for this to work.  If that is so then we all need to know that.  If that is not so but such a policy is being enforced by the app then that is a bug and needs to be fixed.  If you care to test this out on your system please do so.  If creating separate logon's for each share created works you can add that to the Feedback as well.

Thanks for posting.

Hello Mike,

When troubleshooting failing backups to FTP, special FTP log may be of some help: https://kb.acronis.com/content/2465. It would show all the conversation between the client application and the FTP server.

Glad to see that you have found a workaround that allows to run backups successfully.

Slava
