Backup Keeps Failing

Thread needs solution

Backups keep failing where I have not had problems before.  I have checked the Apple, Bootcamp and USB disks and reinstalled Acronis.  It fails every time at about 20GB out of 600GB.  No new software has been installed since the last backup a week ago.  This is the log where it appears to abort at unsupported file type.  Does anybody know how to solve this?  Thanks

I used another disk and this backed up Bootcamp to an incremental backup.  I then reformatted this USB Seagate Portable Drive and again it reached 19.8GB before failing.  The same error messages as above are on the report.

Time Machine is working fine and so is winClone on the Bootcamp disk.

So I have reinstalled, reformatted etc. but still I cannot get the disk to backup.

Hello,

There is an earlier error shown in your Acronis task log: Failed to parse disk number from device name. This is shown twice in the log before the task tries to run.

This would suggest to me that perhaps the database information for the backup task has been damaged or corrupted, or in a worse case that perhaps there is a disk issue here, though this latter seems unlikley as you have other utilities that are working fine for you (Time Machine and winClone).

I have no direct experience with ATIH for MAC products so you may want to raise this issue in the dedicated forum for Mac https://forum.acronis.com/forums/acronis-true-image-discussions/acronis-true-image-mac-forum

The other suggestion I would offer is to create a new backup task for the same source and destination drives with a different name to the original failing one, then see if that helps?

Thanks for your help.  I have posted on this site.  Curious though, there was an upgrade on 17th April after this disk was used last.  I have downgraded Acronis and it is currently on 50GB which is more than the 20GB it has been failing at.  I suppose there must be a problem with the upgrade.  Hopefully they will sort it out.

ALD2355 did you upgrade OSX to 10.11.5 beta pre-release by any chance too?  If so, I suspect that could be the culprit.  When 10.11.4 came out Acronis had to release a fix for it and I imagine the same may be for 10.11.5 as well, but 10.11.5 is not an official release as of yet either and Apple warns that you should not install Beta's on a daily machine and should expect software to not work with Betas as well.

https://beta.apple.com/sp/betaprogram/faq

Please note that since the public beta software has not yet been commercially released by Apple, it may contain errors or inaccuracies and may not function as well as commercially released software. Be sure to back up your Mac using Time Machine and your iOS device with iTunes before installing beta software. Install only on non-production devices that are not business critical. We strongly recommend installing on a secondary system or device, or on a secondary partition on your Mac.

Thanks for your help.  We are using 10.11.4 on a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13', Middle 2014, 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3) updated on 23rd March 2016 rather than a beta version.

As above I have gone back to the November 2015 version and it appears to be working.

K - ruled that out :)

Is the backup of your bootcamp partition occurring in Windows on the system, or from the Mac side?  I've read that the Mac backup is for the full disk only (although apparently working in the earlier version / current version you're using now).

If occurring in Windows and failing at 20Gb, as a test, try disabling VSS and see if Acronis can do the backup on its own without VSS as a test.  https://forum.acronis.com/forum/116164#comment-346710

This could very well be a bug with the newer versions, but there isn't a lot of Mac traffic in the forums.  I'd definitely create a system report and submit it through the Acronis app for feedback and reference this forum link as well so the developers/engineers take a look.

Thanks for the input.  I am running this in OSX so this post https://forum.acronis.com/forum/45832#comment-346558 may not be relevant.  I have downgraded the Acronis to the previous version and it has backed up without any problems.

I'm having the same issue. Initial backup worked flawlessly, next backup stops with an error.

Downgrading to the older version AcronisTrueImage2016_6038 did the trick for me. Now I'm still getting that annoying update-message.

Darius - please submit feedback to Acronis through the app and reference this forum post as well.  This is the user forum so we try to help, but it's important to send feedback directly to Acronis as well.  You are the 3rd person to mention this so it may very well be a problem with the newer version.

I believe you can disable notifications about updates in the app as well - on Windows you can anyway.

The downgrade works as I have now completed two sets of backups.  It is odd because a MacBook is fine but a MacBookPro fails on the upgraded version.  We are running the latest verdion of OSX.
