I ask as a clean-up might result in the only remaining back-up being the corrupt one.

Unfortunately at the moment there is no way to autocancel the clean-up in case the validation fails. That's a very valuable suggestion, and I have just forwarded your comment to the Development team for them to check whether this functionality can be integrated in the next updates.
