Don't use True Image and VISTA SP2
I upgraded my True Image to the 2009 version and after installing SP2 I was getting the BSOD because of the driver tdrpm228.sys. Loading this forced me to have to reload VISTA from scratch. In reading the forum, while they have yet to address the problem the support people tell you to try an older copy of True Image. I just loaded version 9 and while it does not give me the BSOD, VISTA will not load and is smart enough to take you back to a previous restore. So no later copy of True Image will run on VISTA. I have submitted a ticket to the ACRONIS support and a second Email and have heard nothing back. Now I am trying to get my money back for the upgrade. While this use to be a very valuable tool for backing up under XP it can and has destroyed VISTA to a point of having to build your entire system from scratch.

Hello David,
Thank you for using Acronis Products
What we suggest is to use previous builds of Acronis True Image Home 2009, eg. build 9709 not previous version eg. Acronis True Image 9.0 Home. The thing is that Acronis True Image 9.0 Home doesn’t support Windows Vista, you can check it in user guide, therefore it can’t be installed on that operating system.
Please send me the serial number for Acronis True Image Home 2009 via PM and I will provide you the link with the previous build of Acronis True Image Home 2009.

Thank you, Dmitry, for the recommendation on which ATIH 2009 build to use.
I, too, endured about 4 hours of "hoping the build 9796 would stabilize" to no avail. During that time I had 4 BSODs to contend with before executing System Restore on a manually created checkpoint before starting the initial installation. All this was a second attempt after an earlier encounter with BSODs and System Restores. My new Dell Inspiron 546, AMD Quad 64bit, Vista Ultimate replaced my 6 year old P4 Win XP Pro Desktop. I have two other WinXPs in my home, a Desktop and Laptop, with ATIH 2009 running well on both. Without doing any research, I dove into this ATIH 2009 installation and was shocked at the outcome. I'm stabilize again but have a "MBR ERROR 3" message appearing at the beginning of the restart. At first, it was the Acronis F11 Recovery message but now it's this error messge. I'm not happy that the system restore did not recover the Master Boot Record as well. I need to somehow fix this problem as well. Do you have any recommendations? I want to use ATIH 2009 on this new Vista machine but do not want any more horror BSOD shows.
Can you confirm the build I should use and how to obtain it? Thank you, Dmitri....

I have Vista SP2 with TI 2009 and it all works flawlessly. However, I use build 9709, I have downloaded the later build but never installed it. I work on the principle that if it ain't broke don't fix it and for me build 9709 ain't broke. I run it on three Vista machines all of varying ages and specs and it never fails to perform. Stick to full images as well, it's the main function of the software and it's also the best most reliable one.

lol,
With Acronis the newer it is, it seems, the worse it is, although I don't know that you could make a rule of thumb relying on that ;)ng.

There is a easy fix for MBR Error 3. I found it and it worked for me by a search on this site.
Here is the link. http://kb.acronis.com/content/1866

Hello all,
Thank you for using [[http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/ | Acronis True Image]]
James,
I am sending the link to you to download build #9709 via PMs. It should be stable on Windows Vista SP2, and the BSOD shouldn't occur any more. You can fix MBR Error 3 using the Windows installation disk:
1. Put the Windows Vista installation disc in the CD\DVD disc drive, and then (re)start the computer;
2. Press a key when you are prompted;
3. Select language, time, currency, keyboard or input method, and then click Next;
4. Click Repair your computer;
5. Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next;
6. In the System Recovery Options dialog box click Command Prompt;
7. Type the following:
Bootrec.exe /FixMbr
Bootrec.exe /FixBoot
Thank you.

Throw my hat into the fact that .9796 version is acting much worse than the previous one. I can't even clone my drive anymore. Thankfully, I had the previous build that worked like a charm.

I have had one hell of a time (Vista Business 64-bit SP2). Dmitry, where do I send email (address) with ATI 2009 serial number to get build 9709.
And more importantly, when is this and and ability to support Window 7 (64-bit) going to be be availability.
I must fuss....you guys claim this supports Vista 64-bit SP2 and it appears (through bugs) it does not -- this is very, very poor QA (heads should roll, if I were CEO they would). The credibility that your products just work and are reliable is your reputation and you have badly tarnished that.

I guess this is the luck of the draw as to what particular combinations of hardware and installed (other) programs and services you have running. I had vs 9709 working ok on Vista SP2 until it suddenly failed to 'proceed' to a save today. I downloaded the latest version from the website, installed it 'over the top' and TI has just run 2 flawless backups of system and program partitions from one of my hard drives to a separate backup hard drive.
The loading of the latest version and opening of pages was noticeably faster immediately than 9709 was managing. The creation of disk image time seemed shorter than I have been getting, (the second run, a total of 20 GB saved as 4 DVD sized chunks completed in the background in the time it took to read these posts and write this piece). A final time for completion on the success page would be helpful!
Intel Quad Q6600 2.4 GHz, Vista SP2 fully patched to date, 4 GB nominal RAM, regular O&O Defrag, regular JV16 registry clean.

Hello all,
Jay Ferris, I've sent you the link to 9709 build via PM. Please let us know the results.
Thank you.

Alexander, thank you for the link. I tried uninstalling 9796 first as requested by 9709 installation. 9796 will not uninstall so I am leaving all alone at this time.
Thanks

Hi Alexander.....I too am having problems with the latest build with Vista. I would like to give the previous build a try if you wouldn't mind sending me a link.
Thanks

I need the link to the damn older build as well. This is rediculous. My brand new PC is crashing left and right because of the software I purchase to ensure my data is safe.

Thank you, Oleg, for your advice and recommendations...
Good news... The FixMbr repair worked, no problems.
Bad news... I installed the b9709 version successfully. Unfortunately after the restart, execution of ATIH was not.
The startup ATIH 2009 logo splash sat on the desktop for an unusually long time before it began to scan the partitions. The slider only progress about a quarter way, when the screen went blank and a BSOD appeared, very disappointed. So on the restart I executed an uninstall, which also ran slowly then again a blank screen followed by another BSOD. Finally, I restarted in Safe Mode and restored to the checkpoint before the Acronis Installation.
I had this level installed on three XP Pro's. All were upgraded to the latest level b9796. When the motherboard crashed on my oldest desktop, I replaced it with a Dell AMD Quad Vista Ultimate desktop. The XP Pro's ATIHs are still running well.
I am still looking for an ATIH version that will work successfully with this Vista OS, and OBTW I will be upgrading to Win7 when general release if available.
Looking forward to your feedback.
Thank you, Oleg....

Hello,
I have the retail version of Acronis TI Home 2009, which I installed on a new HP laptop running Vista Home Priemium 64, with SP2 installed. Shortly thereafter, the hotkeys (mute, volume, and wifi keys) on my laptop failed to work. I didn't know if this could possibly be related. With several calls to HP, I had to do a complete reinstall of Vista.
My question is since there seems to be many problems with certain builds of Ti and Vista, can you please tell me which build I should install? I have not yet re-installed SP2, but would like to plan on doing so. In addition, I have not yet re-installed TI. Are the correct builds the same for both SP1 and SP2, and where can I download the builds?
Thank you,
Bob

Why isn't the link to the older, functional build readily available? I'm still waiting on an answer from two days ago where to get this link.
When I did my original install I used the CD but the splash screen offered "download the latest version". Dummy me I assumed that would be best and the results was constant BSOD on my brand new laptop. Is there a way I can tell what build is on the CD so I don't have to wait for the secret handshake to get the working version? The label on the CD doesn't provide any build information.

I don't think there is a way to find the build using the boot cd. You did an install? so did it install?

It was a box version that I purchased. When I put the setup CD in it gave the option of installing from the disk or the latest version from the web. I chose the web, it did install. Occasionally the program would start but even when not running Vista would BSOD. I uninstalled and have no problems since. The forum threads suggest the older build works but you need someone to provide you the link to download it.
My question was can I determine what build is on the commercial CD I purchased so I don't have to wait to find out where the install files are online.

Will have to stop meeting like this Joe!
So you haven't reinstalled without asking for the latest version?
- Log in to post comments

ARGH!
I initially installed the latest version and that's what caused the problem. The forum thread suggests an older build doesn't have the problem but you need the company to provide a link to download it. That's all I want or to know how to check the build that came on the CD.
Am I misunderstanding you or vice versa?

Is this what you're looking for?
The CD that came with your boxed version should be bootable. Use the CD to start your computer. When prompted to start ATI, choose Acronis True Image Full Version (something like that). Once the main screen is displayed, press the ALT key on your keyboard. This will display a small menu at the upper left of the screen (File - Help). Select Help > About. The CD version and build number should be displayed.

Joe & bin - glad to help! I really know very little about ATI but did pick that tidbit up somewhere.

You might consider running the Acronis Clean Up Utility to remove any leftovers from the previous uninstall then reboot and re-install from your original boxed CD.
