Bootable usb not seeing new m.2 SSD
I just bought a new Dell Optiplex 7040 micro computer and I got the new M.2 256GB PCIe SSD Samsung PM951 NVMe Drive. I just updated to the latest version of Acronis Snap Deploy 5(5.0.1,660) hoping that it might fixed the issue, but saddly it did not work.
Does anyone know how I can get this newer PCIe NVMe SSD drive visible to Acronis Snap Deploy boot USB files?
or
Can you release a new USB Boot file so it can see this newer SSD drives?
Thanks
Sarah

Hello all,
Sarah, I've submitted a request for the custom build with the support of NVMe devices. I will keep you posted.
dash-pilot, I would ask you for a little bit more patience, a major update for Acronis True Image 2016 with the fix is expected soon.
Thank you,

Thanks for fixing this issue in the new version of Acronis True Image 2016. For now, I had to learn how to do create a bootable PE and create a imagex imaging.

dash-pilot - start a thread over in the ATIH 2016 forum - we should be able to help, but don't want to take over Sarah's thread here. Let us know what version of the Windows ADK you used to create the WinPE media as well. The Windows 10ADK (6.0) has the necessary hard drive drivers and should work. However, you may also have to find your controller drivers from the manufacturer and slip those in if the drive is still not being detected with the default WinPE using ADK 6.0.

Hi, I have the same issue here, I tried to image an HP z230 and HPz240 with M.2 drive. The image won't go to the m.2 drive/ a PCIE flash drive, but when I put a spinning disk, the image will go through. Any suggestions on this? This has been an issue for me for over a month now. Any suggestions?
Thanks!

First off download and install Microsoft Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit (Windows ADK)
Download GImageX Cool GUI Interface
Watch this Youtube on using Gimagex
You will need to modify the "wim" file to install the drivers for your M.2 F6 Drives and you might need to install USB 3 drives. Make sure you add the GimageX to the "Wim" file before you unmount.
I found this web site real helpful Creating a WinPE USB
Once you modify the Boot.wim file and created a bootable USB or CD-Rom. Now you can boot to Win PE and back up your image.
I hope this helps.

Hi Sarah - thanks for posting!
If you're using the Win10ADK to build your WinPE, it should already have the necessary drivers for your PCIE NVME drives. You can then build a bootable USB directly in Acronis automatically that should work without needing to use third party tools. If you do have a unique system that requires additional drivers, not found in the WinPE created with the Windows 10 ADK, there is a nifty tool called DISMgui, that can mount your boot.wim file and let you add drivers with it pretty easy. Shouldn't be needed in most cases if using the Win 10 ADK to create your WinPE though.
My biggest gripe with the Snap Deploy WinPE version is no Stand-a-lone utility included like in the WinPE version of SnapDeploy. Other forum responses from the Engineers say this is by design, but does not make sense to me since it's not limited in Acronis Backup 11.5/7 for workstation and or in home editions. I hope that others continue to submit feedback to Acronis through their online account and/or the application so that we can try to get this changed. Otherwise, we need more frequent driver updates in the default Linux bootable recovery media to address newer technologies more quickly.

Bobbo_3C0X1, Thanks for the reply!
I'm still using Win 7 for at least for another 2 years. I have some 3rd party software that was a headache to get it working with Win 7 and there's no way I can't get it working with Win 10. I do like that tool DISMGui, I found that tool first when I had the figure out how to add the new USB 3 drivers to the boot.wim and install.wim file for Windows 7. What's nice is that least I've learned some new things and I don't always have to rely on Snap Deploy to back up my image.
Thanks Acronis for not keeping up with the new drivers.

Pier, you should post over in the 2016 forum down the road. I have 5510's - 7470's at work and they are all picking up fine with the Acronis default media since v6559.
2 things...
1) if you systems use fastboot (Windows 10 default), when you shutdown, it's not really shutting down - only hibernating. The Windows locks down that hibernation file, it can prevent other bootable discs from functioning properly. Either disable fastboot (I turn of hibernation because these drives are fast enough on their own and it avoids this trouble, but that's just me). Otherwise, instead of shutting down the normal way, use an elevated command prompt and shutdown /s to force shutdown instead of fastboot. Rebooting/restarting will force a full shutdown before starting up again too.
2) You want to make sure to boot your recovery media to match your OS install. By default, these systems are both UEFI/GPT or Legacy/MBR/Bios. Howewer, the default install is UEFI. So, after rebooting, press F12 to get to the one-time boot menu and specifically select the UEFI USB boot option to ensure your bootable recovery media is booting in UEFI mode. You'll know you've booted in UEFI mode when the Acronis menu is DOS-like with a black background and white old school looking text. Legacy boot is a blue background with GUI icons for the initial boot menu.
If you've gotten past fast boot, are using bootable recovery media with v6559 or newer, and are booting it in UEFI mode, it should see your drive just fine.

Pierre, head over to the 2016 forum so you can get some additional assistance with ATIH 2016. You need to boot your bootable media in UEFI mode. Reboot the system (not shutdown). Upon startup, press F12 to get to the one time boot menu. IN your boot menu, pick UEFI USB and not Legacy USB. It should see the drive. Also, what version of acronis 2016 did you use - must be v6559 or later as versions prior to that do not support NVME PCIE hard drives with the default linux bootable media.

Pierre - this will be the last time I respond for ATIH 2016 in the SD5 forum as courtesy, please post over in the 2016 forum so you can get some additional assistance there from other ATIH 2016 users and MVPs.
I don't have hands on with a 5510 at the moment. However, I just used a 7710 without issue and have an E5570 in front of me. It does detect the drive no problem for both backup and restore. If you have followed my instructions, there is no reason why it shouldn't work. If you are using a CD/DVD - please don't the Dell's don't detect UEFI on DVD's very well. Instead, create your bootable media on a USB drive and specifically select UEFI mode using the F12 one-time boot menu.
If you can post similar pictures (like the ones attached here) we can validate what you're doing, but right now, I can only guess that you're still doing someting differently. Please post in the 2016 forum though in a new thread.

ok but it`s not helping me cause i create the media with winpe :-)
- Log in to post comments

You need to install the Windows 10 ADK and create the WinPE with it. If you are using Win AdK 5.0 or 4.0 it does not have the drivers built in (this is microsfot limitation). Uninstall your ADK, download and install Windows 10 ADK and then recrate your media and you're good to go. There should be no need to use WinPE with the default Linux bootable media supporting these drives now. You can if you want, but it's not necessary.

Is there a newer build than the 5.0.1,660? I'm working on a Optiplex 7040 now with M2.SSD device. i want to make sure no issues with imaging. I do say someone mentioned adjusting SATA to AHCI instead of RAID.

Erik - check your PM. 1666beta has NVME support and better NIC support.

Bobbo_3C0X1 - thanks for the PM!!! Upgrading now!
The million dollar question that i wish Acronis would answer for us though is:
Why is it that Acronis is so slow to release the updates to registered users?
Earlier this year, i had a similar issue with NIC drivers and the latest build at that time was 1658 or 1660. But after going round and round with support for three days they gave me the beta release of 1662 which included the NIC drivers that i needed. Then i never saw 1662 make it onto the website for download. Super frustrating!
- Log in to post comments

I understand your frustration and this update is a beta fix for Snap Deploy that fixes several issues. Acronis has to make sure it's not going to blowup something else in the program. It would be nice if Acronis would put it on the website, but mark it in red as a beta version.

Sarah,
I completely understand that the latest build (1666) that is still in Beta would be only available thru Acronis Support.
My point is that it’s now September 2016 and the latest version that you can download from the Acronis Account portal is build 1660 which was released way back on February 24th. And that build does not contain drivers\support for either current NICS or for NVMe.
Meanwhile i know that 1662 which added additional NIC support was available back in April (because that’s when support sent it to me) and now if you ask around the forum, you can get people to send you 1666Beta which adds NVMe support.
So my point is- at this point why is 1662 or 1663, 1664 or 1665 not available for download by licensed customers? It’s like some sort of weird back alley drug deal to get Snap Deploy updates. :)
and yes -to your point it would be even better if in addition to current full releases, they would have the beta listed but with an asterik or red color etc to denote that its the beta release.

Wish I could help answer the question - I've asked myself, but haven't recieved an answer.
I too, would like to see an official release with both the updated NIC and NVME driver support publicly made available. 1666 beta seems to be working well for everyone I've passed it along too - as far as I can tell, it's just 1660 with the updated drivers (1662 brought better Intel Nic support and 1666 brough NVME PCIE hard drive support), but since there is no official release notes on it, I'm not 100% on any other changers either. Seems like it has been doing more good than harm (haven't heard any negativity as a result of upgrading from 1660). As a beta product though, I can see why Acronis would be hesitant to release it to the masses, but does seem like it's been far too long before an official update has been released (IMHO).
For those of you wondering the same thing, probably wouldn't hurt to send our thoughts to support engineeer Ekaterina to see if she can get some traction on this with the developers and/or management (General Manager Gaidar is very helpful too - not sure if he deals with all Acronis products though, but he'd be another good avenue to check with).
- Log in to post comments

Well, I'm thinking that Acronis is coming out with version 6.0 soon and thats why they are not coming out with anymore official update releases for 5.0. So all we have is the beta version that are floating around on the forums.
Thanks Bobbo_3C0X1 for all your help.

Glad to help where I can. I reached out to Gaidar and he is going to see what he can find out about SD5/6 development. Hopefully we'll see some response now that he's on the case.

Hello,
Can someone send me the beta 1662? I need to test it since most of our new PC's have NVME.
Thanks,
John

Hey John,
you need the beta 1666.
1662 resolved the issues with newer nics, wheareas 1666 resolves the issue with NVMe hard drives.
ill forward a link to you in a private message

HIT Tech
I'll send you a PM.
as noted above- 1666 beta adds both additinoal NIC support and support for NVME that 1660 does not have.

Am I able to get the link for the Beta 1666? I have a few machines that I need to have imaged with NVME and version 1660 will not work.
- Log in to post comments

Hi Tom, I've sent you a PM with the link. That will to the trick as it has the correct drives for the NVME PCIE hard drives.
Keep in mind that the LInux media, still lacks RAID drivers though. Many of the new systems that have just a single PCIE NVME drive are still being set in the bios with a SATA mode of RAID as this provides better performance than AHCI (deeper queue depth). Should that be the case on any of your systems, you can temporarly switch the bios to AHCI mode, back and/or deploy adn then switch the bios back to AHCI.
Or, you can create WinPE and inject the IRST (Intel Rapid Storage Technolgy) drivers. The downside with the WinPE is that it does not include "stand-a-lone" deployment though :(
