Using Rescue Media with Backups From Different Acronis Versions
I have a mixture of True Image 2014, 2015 and 2016 in my company on Win8.1 machines (all identical hardware) deployed world wide.
I would like to create an "image" on a master machine and then distribute the image to all users. The users could then apply that image to their hardware on an as needed basis. Similarly, local sites could create a local "image" to use.
The rescue media seems to be the best method. As this allows the image to be placed on any target - regardless of starting state.
Unfortunately, it appears that rescue media can only use an image created with the same level of the rescue media (e.g. 2014 with 2014, 2015 with 2015, 2016 with 2016)
Any thoughts on how to create an "image" that can be used with any level of rescue media?

Robert,
Where did you get your information that "Unfortunately, it appears that rescue media can only use an image created with the same level of the rescue media (e.g. 2014 with 2014, 2015 with 2015, 2016 with 2016)"?
I have personally restored an ATI 2016 backup using ATI 2014 rescue media...with no problem. I don't have 2015, so I can't check that out.

Thank you for the responses.
My information comes from collegues in other parts of the world - I created an "image" using 2014 rescue media and transfered to my collegues. They attempted to use 2016 rescue media with the "image" and were unsuccessful.

Robert,
Did you verify the image you created was not corrupted prior to sending it to your collegues? Sometimes images become corrupt during creation without any apparent cause although this is very rare it does happen. Without verification that the image is sound (restorable) you cannot guarantee the image will be restorable.
The best way to verifiy an image without restoring that image is by opening the image in Windows Explorer, navigating about the image and copying a few files from the image to another location. If such procedures work the image is restorable.

From Steve's earlier link...
Acronis Product | Can restore, mount and explore (deploy) backups created with: |
Acronis True Image 2016, Acronis True Image Cloud (Release 2016) on Windows |
backups of Windows computers created with: |
There's no reason an image created with 2014 should not be restorable with 2016.
However, is the restore failing, or is it not booting (if this is an OS image). That can be a completely different issue related to BIOS compatibilty, different hardware needed Universal to be run to generalize drivers, etc. As Enchantec mentioned, they should be able to either double click the .tib and it will open in Windows file explorer, or they should be able to right click the .tib and "mount" it. If they can do either, the image is fine. If not, the specific behavior and/or error might shed some light on the problem.

Thank you for the follow-up information.
I have confirmed that the image that was created is not corrupt by opening the .tib, looking at the contents, copying a small file out of the .tib and examining the small file. I also restored the image using the same rescue media that I used to create it (all 2014).
I will work with trusted collegues to perform an experiment using rescue media generated with True Image 2014 in the next few days and will update this thread when I have results.

In fact, over the last versions, it has been possible to restore images produced with more recent versions of ATI, using an older version of the rescue media.
