Create new system disk from backup

Thread needs solution

I have done two backups from external disk (from two other PCs) on a NAS system.

Now I'd like to restore the backups in two new Hard disks. Unfortunately I do not see the recover button.

1. Accidentally the backup settings was deleted from Backup menu. Can the job be done now?

2. On the one of two backups (from two seperate disks) I accidentally have included my local system disk also. Can this disk be removed/deleted?

Thanks,

Ioannis

Ioannis,

Please see the information for adding existing backup images in the ATIH 2015 User Guide - you will need to navigate to the folder on your NAS where the backup(s) are held and provide any credentials (user name & password) that may be needed by the NAS - this will allow you to add back these backups to your task list and will then give you the option to recover these.

If you have created a backup image which contains two separate disk drives, then you can choose to restore only one of these disk drives and ignore the other.  You cannot delete one of the saved disk images from the backup archive image as the archive is 'read-only'.

Hi Steve. Thanks for the reply.

I did that, but no new backup shows up in the list. Only my main backup appears.

Ioannis, does your backup have the same file name as the images created by your main backup task? If so, then that might be a reason why you don't see it as it will be added in as additional recovery points for the existing task rather than as a separate task.

You may like to try making a copy of the backup image on the NAS with a different name and adding that in to see if it gives you a new task in the list of backups?

Hi Steve. Well, no. It is a completely different backup from a different HDD that was taken from another computer.

After I created a new settings and made the backup to my NAS, I deleted these settings, leaving only my standard backup scheme that is executed regularly.

I see no way to make use of the backup to the new drive, although I can enter into the backupo file, copy any file I want etc. I just want to recover or create a new drive from the existing Acronis file... Too bad it is so hard to do that.

Thank you for your support

Ioannis

Ioannis,

Don't give up...there are some more things you can try.

Have you tried booting from rescue media and performing the restore using rescue media?  If your NAS is connected via ethernet, then you should be able to do this.

FtrPilot

Yes, I did that too. Made a bootable CD, booted from this and... no NAS appeared... Whatever I tried to do in this environment could not see the nas and the backup.

I feel at the moment very dump...

Ioannis

Ioannis,

Please see KB document: 45331: Acronis Bootable Media: Troubleshooting NIC Detection for help in checking that you have an active network connection to connect to your NAS

Ioannis,

It has been a while since I logged into my NAS using rescue media.  I will try that later today and see what has to be done.

One other question...did you use a different NAS account (username & password) when you created the backups?

FtrPilot

Ioannis,

I am able to log into my NAS using WinPE rescue media.  Creating WinPE rescue media is covered in paragraph 8.1.1 of the ATI 2015 user manual.  If you are able to create WinPE rescue media, please let me know and I can step you through the process to select the backup and perform the restore.

If you are unable to create WinPE rescue media, then perhaps you could copy the .tib backup files from the NAS onto a USB drive.  It would need to be a different drive from the one you plan to restore to.  Then restore from the USB drive.

A Kingwin USB dock can be used to attach regular 3 1/2 drives and 2 1/2 drive through USB...see link below.

Please let us know how you proceed.

In a different thread (sorry can't remember which one), Enchantech mentioned that if the NAS does not show up automatically, it cannot be mapped directly with the Linux bootable media.  Instead, one would have to use WinPE, then map the NAS with a drive letter using START NET commands to assign a letter. From there it could then be navigated in Acronis file explorer.

This only occurs with a NAS.  If a share is Windows, then you can use either the Linux boot media or winPE boot media and just type the UNC path in the explorer path windows and it will prompt for credentials and once they are provided, it will connect.

Thanks for the replies.

I will try to copy the backups in a local disk and see if the bootable (Linux) cd will help. I though Linux is better tan WinPE...

Will be back soon.

Ioannis

Here I am again.

I did a Acronis Repair installation just to be sure.

Then tried to copy the backup from the NAS to local disk. No go. It does not ADD the backup in the My backups list.

Tried from NAS too but no, the same result.

I am sure it is a bug in the program its self. There is no reason why it doesn't add the backup.

Regarding the WinPE boot disc....

Tried to make a Windows PE bootable media but all optons are greyed out. It suggest to download one of five big files. I selected the third, for Windows 7 (my system), and it resulted in an ISO file. I burned that to a DVD. Now what should I do? The buttons of Acronis Bootable Media Builder are still grey. As I am too...

Ioannis, have you copied the backup from the NAS to the local disk?  If so, how are you trying to Add the backup to your backups list?  This does not happen automatically just by doing the copy.  You need to click on the Add Backups button at the bottom of the left side column, then take the option to Add existing backup.  See screen shot 1 below.

Next, you will get a new window where you need to navigate to where your backup is held, then choose that backup to be added to the list.  It should not have the same name as any existing backup task archive files.  See screen shot 2.

My next screen shot shows my adding a backup from my own NAS drive.

The last screen shot shows the NAS backup now added to my backup list.

Hi Steve.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, exactly the way you describe is what I do. But the program does not show the backup in the list.
