Incremental backup issue

Thread needs solution

I am using ATIH2016 and have recently come across a problem.  With an external drive, I did a backup successfully.  Then, when an increment was attempted, this too went successfully.  The external drive was then turned off.

However, I wanted to back up again soon after and so turned the external drive on again and ran an (incremental) backup – and then received the message:

"The backup location was not found on the destination drive. Make sure the correct storage device is connected to the computer."

As this second increment was run very soon after the first, and no disks had been removed, I don’t understand why the system cannot find the drive.

Is this a known issue or does anyone have an idea about what is going on?  I should add that I am also backing up to the Secure Zone on a daily basis and that is working fine!

Alan,

"The backup location was not found on the destination drive. Make sure the correct storage device is connected to the computer."

This message may indicate that your external drive was allocated a different drive letter when you turned it back on again - this can occur if you plug in any other USB drive device during the period when your external drive was powered off.  Windows by default just allocates the first free drive letter unless you have previously used a letter at the other end of the alphabet for the drive.

Please download the Log File Viewer app - link below in my signature, and check the log file to see what other details for this error may have been given.

Many thanks for the pointer to the log viewer, it helped me to find the logs, let alone read them!

However the drive letter was not re-allocated on the disk startup.  So the problem remains.

As I did get a virus on the external disk at one point, I will do a complete re-format and then start afresh with backups; in hope...

Thanks for your help

Alan, if you are making a clean start, then I would recommend creating a new backup task to write to your external drive, just to eliminate any residual information left over in the Acronis database for the old task.

Steve; Yes, I created a new task and re-formatted the external disk (did a full format, not a quickie and it took ages!).  Then I did a full backup and two succesful incremental backups - all without turning off the drive.

Today, I tried again after the computer being off overnight and it failed as before (though the drive letter was OK).  Then I re-set the destination path for the backup task - and all went OK.

So, if it does not go next time I guess I know what to do to fix it but it is weird, to me, that the system 'forgets' the path as set.

So, done.  Thanks for your help/advice.

Alan,

The next time you face this issue before you re-set the destination path to the device try using Windows File Explorer to view the contents of the drive. Once you have done that then attempt the backup again.  If that works please post back and include your drive make and model number.

Thanks for that.  However all seems to be well now and backup is working as expected.

If I get problems in the future I will follow your advice and let you know the details if it is all OK.

Cheers
