OSS Issues

Thread needs solution

OK, after seeral days of trying to get OSS to behave well with XP64, I am uninstalling it and hoping that the MBR issues go away.

I consistently get unbootable disk errors, etc.. on boot up.

What is it with OSS? doesn;t seem to work an play well on my system.

When I install OSS, I see no bootwiz folder on the root drive, and, yes, I have hidden files showing.

I am growing a little weary of ADD and OSS.

OSS does have problems on some computers. Sometimes it won't stay activated or will "break" a lot. One thing that can cause this is if any of the OSS files get defragged (if they're moved, OSS can't find them).

When OSS is installed in standard mode, it will usually default to using the currently booted Windows partition (if installed from Windows). The best method is to do a custom install and select the partition you want for the OSS files.

Hey MudCrab,

You got me started a long time ago using OSS.  I have 4 different computers all multi-booting perfectly with Windows7,Vista & XP.

But, I have one that is giving me fits.  I tried a lot of combinations with no luck. I have finally removed all partitions except a small logical one for OSS and another with Windows 7.  IF i deactivate OSS, boots into Windows.  When I activate it, and for the first time it loads the menu and it will boot into Windows. When I reboot, it locks up on the 'processing' screen, locks the mouse and just sits there with no drive activity.  If I reboot with the bootable cd, repair OSS, it works again - only for the first time. Driving me crazy.

Before I completely reformat and start over, could you look at my oss file and see if anything jumps out at you? I'm thinking maybe it was the particular order of installed OS's that I did on this particular computer and a drive signature or something is screwed up.  Or if it is just this computer.  Its Dell 690,8gb ram raided..less than 6 months old. Using the

Kevin,

I'm not seeing anything odd in the file.

Can you check a few things?

  1. Activate OSS and boot to the OSS menu. Don't start Windows. Reboot or shutdown and restart the computer. Does the OSS menu come back up? In other words, is it booting into Windows that's causing the problem or is it OSS by itself.
  2. Try disabling the CD-ROM drivers in OSS. This can help with quite a few OSS problems.
  3. Is DD and/or OSS installed in Windows 7? If so, do you still have problems with OSS if you disable the Acronis OS Selector Reinstall Service?
  4. Was OSS installed from the DD/OSS CD or from OSS in Windows?
  5. Is there a BIOS update available for the computer?
  6. If you convert the OSS partition to a Primary partition, does it make a difference?
  7. How much free space is available on the OSS partition?

Finally had time to test some things out.

Just cycling the OSS by rebooting the computer without launching an operating system - did indeed still lock it up.

Disabling the the CD-ROM drivers did the trick!   Never had to do that on any computer before - but then again this is the newest one I have used OSS on.

Don't know if there is such a thing as a "King" Mudcrab, but you might want to add that to your signature ;-)

Appreciate your knowledge...
