ERROR : Cannot find version 5

Thread needs solution

Hi Forum!

Updated from 2015 to 2016 a  few weeks back.  Everything was working fine.

Now getting error message "Cannot find version 5.  You may have moved or deleted it.  Please click Browse and specify its location or ignore this message."

When I click Retry, it just errors again.

Anyone got advice?

THank you!

Rick, welcome to these user forums.

Please download a copy of the Log File Viewer app (link in my signature below) and check the logs for any further messages that may help identify why this error is being given.

Have you changed either the target disk drive or the drive letter used by the disk drive for your backup task?

That is probably one of the common causes of this type of error.  Plugging in another USB device such as a memory stick can take the allocated drive letter used by a backup drive which is then given the next available letter instead.

It is recommended to pre-allocate a drive letter from towards the end of the alphabet that will not be changed by plugging in other devices later.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the advice.

Changed the drive letter to Z, and was able to run the backup.   While the only USB external that I pop in and out is my iPhone for charging, this does not seem to have caused a problem in the past however, we are dealing with Windows so anything is possible.

Should I encounter the problem again somewhere, I will return to this post - else have a great summer!

Best,

Rick

Rick, thanks for giving feedback, hope everything continues to work well for you.

I recently found an issue with using Z: as the USB drive letter as I have been using it to avoid Windows automatically reassigning drive letters.  Well, after upgrading a system to Windows 10 for a family member, I then built it from scratch.  I installed an older wireless HP printer (should have noted the model # for reference here).  I'll be darned, but that stupid printer always assigns its Sd card slot as Z and seems to mount that letter before the external hard drive - even if the hard drive is physically connected to the PC - I don't know how, but it always wins out.  As a result, I've stopped using Z: and am sticking to something a little farther in, but still closer to the end.  I suppose something like this could happen with other drive letters and/or devices too, but this one through me for a loop!

Thanks Bobbo!
