Hi Gustri,

According to the screen shot you're trying to make a "Files/folders" backup type. You should back up entire partition C: and D: when selecting the backup source - do NOT select files/folders backup if you want to protect entire disks/partitions. See the Disk/Volumes section in http://www.acronis.com/en-us/support/documentation/AcronisBackup_11.7/index.html#738.html

Thank you.

Hi Vasily,

Thank you for replying, If I select All C: Drive and particular folder on D: Drive. Can I perform bare metal recovery?

Is there problem when I backup File (*.VHDX) and that Virtual Machine is Powered On, in my case is VM's that contain Exchange 2013?

Hi,

Bare metal recovery is possible with Disk/Volume backup type only. Note that you can perform granular files/folders recovery from such archives as well. Also you can exclude specific files by mask or select excluded folders directly when configuring backup task.

The VHDX files can also be backed up when you back up entire disk/volume where these files resides  (but NOT when you back them up as files) - the Hyper-V VSS Writer will ensure proper quiescing of the VM data into this file. However for VM backup it makes more sense to use Agent for Hyper-V and protect VMs separately (back up at VM level, rather than at Hyper-V host level), since otherwise recovery of just a single VM from host backup will be quite complicated: you will need to search for .vhd and configuration files of this VM inside the host backup, recover them somewhere and then register the VM manually in Hyper-V manager.

Please also see http://www.acronis.com/en-us/support/documentation/AcronisBackup_11.7/index.html#19851.html which describes Hyper-V host backup scenario in details.

Thank you.

Okay, I got it. I will try again on Monday.

I'm doing this because the customer want to Microsoft Exchange (VM's) can be restore for particular Mailbox, and I think this cannot be perform when I use Acronis Agent for Hyper-V, am I right?

This is my customer environtment :

  • 1 Physical Server (Windows Server 2012 R2). With Hyper-V Feature is Activated.
  • 1 Physical Server (Windows Server 2003 SP 2). This where I installed Acronis Backup Advanced 11.7

There are 2 VM's on Hyper-V :

  • Windows Server 2012 - MS.Exchange (MAILBOX)
  • Windows Server 2012 - MS.Exchange (CAS).

They want to backup :

  • Both VM's (Microsoft Exchange MAILBOX & CAS) - Can restore particular Mailbox or Folder.
  • Physical Machine (Windows Server 2012 R2).

So I give them a solution like this :

1. Job For Physical - Once.  This is for Master Copy. On this machine I used Agent For Windows.

2. Job for VM - Full On Sunday and Incremental on Weekdays. On this machine I used Agent For Exchange.

So if there crash on Physical. I perform Bare Metal Recovery from Master Copy. And restore Virtual Machine from the second Job. Cause if I create continuously job for Physical it will make double file (VHDX File From Physical & File from Virtual).

Is there something wrong? Or If you have recommendation for my case, I really apreciate that.

Thank You.

Hi,

Your setup looks Ok in general. Remember that for "Windows Server 2012 - MS.Exchange (MAILBOX)" protection and granular mailbox recovery you need to have Agent for Exchange installed inside this VM (it's not completely clear whether you've done it or not yet) and perform Exchange DB or mailbox level backup separately.

For the 1st job to avoid excessive backup space usage you can configure the job for "Physical Server (Windows Server 2012 R2) with Hyper-V Feature" Disk/Volumes backup setting up files/folders exclusions in the job settings in order to exclude the .vhd files from processing.

The 2nd job should back up the 2 VMs through Acronis Agent for Hyper-V, i.e. entire VM backup

The 3rd job should be configured for Exchange items protection through Agent for Exchange installed inside the VM (as I described above).

In other words you seem to be missing only the 3rd job for Exchange protection (the first 2 jobs are configured already).

Thank you.

Hi Vasily,

Thank you for your input. Now I have two option. But my customer going with first option, where full backup for Hyper-V Host that contains VHDX files. I already changed the job, with Disk Level Backup. And the job will run on saturday. I have Universal License, and i just try to install the RecoveryExchangeAgent on CAS Server (VM's), but i got an error : Not Compatible (The Exchange Version is 2013 CU 10 / Build 1130.7 you can see from Image that I attached).

My question is,

When we have seperate Server For Mailbox and CAS, are we have to install Agent For Exchange on both of them? Or I just need to install Agent for Exchange on Mailbox Server.

Best Regards,

Gustri

Hi Gustri,

The Agent for Exchange should be installed on the nodes with Mailbox role only. There is no need to install it on the other cluster nodes. Please see the following chapter of the documentation which describes Exchange clusters support in more details: http://www.acronis.com/en-us/support/documentation/AcronisBackup_11.7/index.html#18310.html

Thank you.

Vasily.

Well, Thank you so much for answer my question and given some recommendation. This is very useful for me as a beginner.

See you on the other thread!

Best Regards
