Recovery Success! Great Tool but One Question

Thread needs solution

I had an issue yesterday that required the use of the Acronis recovery USB drive that I had created some time ago.  The process worked as advertised and the only thing that wasn't 100% on the process was that the time reported was all over the place and changed up and down all the time!  They should just fix it or turn it off!

The question I have is what version of the operating system gets recovered?  I created the recovery drive probably 6 months ago and this summer there was the big anniversary update to Windows 10.  After the recovery, my PC advised that I needed an update.  And that was the anniversary update.  If I regularly re-create the recovery drive, will the version of the operating system that was on my system be installed on my recovery drive or do they use some other version?

Thanks.  And again the system was not booting and this came to the rescue!  Worth every penny I paid for the software over the years!

Yes, the estimated time jumps all over the place as it is recalculated on the fly.  During the recovery process, Acronis is decompressing the backup file and writing different file types.  Large files (media like movies or .iso files), restore quickly on hard drives.  Small files (like the OS and deeply nested folders with manu small file types like .dll's) take longer to recover so this changes the restore times.  Take the recovery time with a grain of salt.  If you've timed it yourself, you can roughly expect that the recovery will be abou the same if the size of the backups is about the same too.

As for the restore, it depends on how old your backup is.  Acronis takes a snapshot in time of exactly how your computer was when the backup was completed.  If you restore a backup image from 6 months ago, your PC will be restored to exactly how it was when you took that backup 6 months ago.  This means that all settings, files, folders, data, etc will be just as they were 6 months ago.

The recovery drive (your Acronis bootable rescue media - I'm assuming that's what you mean) is only the tool for starting the backup/retore process and has no influence on the data that will be restored. That is dependent upon how often you are backing up and which backup you select to restore.

To clarify, there is no need to update the recovery/rescue medium because of changes in the OS on your PC. To Bobbo's point, the OS and programs are just "data" for Acronis.

It is better to update the rescue medium when you upgrade to a new version of Acronis. In general, no need to update it for a new build/update within a version. Also, in theory, the rescue medium works on any computer, but it is better to test it.

Thnaks for your replies.  All understood but it sure is odd that I had to do an update - the Windows 10 Anniversary update - after I restored the complete C drive from an Acronis backup that was done the night befre.  I do an Acronis update every evening so I am up to date.  Only thing I can assume is that the anniversary update never was done from Windows update.  It is now applied and Arconis has run twice.  I do an incremental backup with a new full backup every 6 mights then keep 2 full sets.  Hopefully that's enough!

I have had 2 machines where the anniversary update was downloaded to the machine by Windows Update but the installation did not run, presumably because the machines were not running when the predetermined time that Windows Update applied for the update to be installed.  Had to run a manual install on them instead.  So I think your thought about your update not being applied is correct.
