Backup schemes gone AWOL

Thread needs solution

I have 3 backup schemes and, as subject implies, they have all gone missing.  When I open Acronis, it is in the default of setting up a full backup and no schemes are available.

The last 2 hourly backup was performed and is visible on the drive. I did do a Win 7 update this morning but that was prior to the last scheduled 2 hourly backup.

I have tried rebooting but no change.

Cameron, welcome to these user forums.

Please confirm that you are using the latest build version 6613 for ATIH 2015?

Please download the Log File Viewer app from the link in my signature below and use this to check for any error messages in the ATIH Service logs.

Some screen shots of what you are seeing would also be helpful to our understanding this issue.

Hi Steve, thanks for the reply.

The build is 6613 and I have auto update set so Acronis is reporting that it is up to date.

After posting yesterday, I decided to format my external destination drive and proceed with a full backup, I didn't have the time to be setting up the various schemes that seem to have gone missing.

After turning my computer back on this morning, Acronis seems to have no record of the back-up, please see screenshot attached.

I have run your log viewer and can see the log for the full backup yesterday which it reports as successful.  What is interesting is I can also see the 2 hourly scheduled backups (critical WIP folders which have an SD card as detination) are still occuring even though the backup schemes are not appearing in the Acronis main screen.

Following is the log output at the end the last 2 hourly scheduled backup;

          message=The following backups have been successfully created: E:\Acronis Backups\Daily_inc_b1_s557_v1.tib

Finish= 14/08/2016 9:32:17 AM

With regard to errors in the log files, every log seems to contain an error at module 152 as follows;

id=36;  level=1;  module=152;  code=29;  date/time=13/08/2016 1:27:04 PM

id=38;  level=2;  module=316;  code=0;  date/time=13/08/2016 1:27:04 PM

The error is present in all the log files going back long before I noticed the the loss of the schemes from the main screen.

Looking at the Console log, I notice that all the logs produce an error code for Online backup (I'm on a satellite connection so I don't use that feature) however starting from yesterday, there seems to be some sort of database error as well;

I assume these logs are generated whenever the Acronis main screen is accessed, some of these console logs are much longer so I have only picked a short one to display here.

Cheers, Cameron

Cameron, thanks for the further information and screen shot.

At this point there are probably only two realistic options, one is to try just forcing a rebuild of the Acronis Database files and the second is to go for a full clean reinstall.

See the procedure below for rebuilding the database.

Create a clean copy of the Acronis Database files:

  1. Stop all Acronis Services and Processes - you can do this via the Windows Task Manager (right-click on the bottom status bar and select Task Manager), then select / end or stop the Acronis items shown.  Next, type Services.msc at the Start > Run prompt and use the Services console to end all Acronis services.
  2. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to C:\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\ - this may be hidden on some systems, if so, change the Explorer View options to show hidden files & folders.
  3. Rename the Database folder at the above location to Database.OLD
  4. Restart the main Acronis True Image application which will restart all other required services & processes, and in turn will create a new Database folder and files.

Note: that you will lose your backup task history that was stored in the old copy of the database files but this will be repopulated as your backup tasks are run again.  You can also use the option to Add existing backup(s) if your backups are not found automatically when Acronis restarts.

Thanks heaps Steve, all my schemes are back now as per your instructions.

Any idea why this may happen?  Perhaps because the 2 hourly scheduled backup was up to 557 increments? While there was still plenty of capacity left on the destination drive, perhaps I should occassionally scrub it and start from scratch.

That would be my guess, but you just never know when other third party applications like antivirus, malware, Windows updates, Windows upgrades, Acronis updates, etc can be fe a factor too.

That's a lot of incrementals to piece together along the way though - definitely more possiblity for corruption to occur over time and if any incremental does become corrupted, then every single one after it will be no good either.

Even though Acronis offers nonstop backup and incrementals for life, they are pretty risky and not a backup practice you'd find in most IT departments of a business.  Having more frequent fulls is a safer bet.  With as many incrementals as you're using (1 every 2 hours), the most I'd be comfortable doing is a weeks worth and even then, I'd be a little leery.  By limiting the # of incrementals, if things do break, at least you have a full that is only a week old to fall back on for a more recent restore point.

I'd also recommend a second backup with an offset full (say have the 1st job do a full on Mondays and the second job start a full on Thursdays).  On the secnd job, switch up the type to so that you use differentials instead of incrementals and space them out daily or every other day (if you have the space and/or another backup drive or network share to run them too). Never hurts to diversify backups in frequency, type and location to give yourself some redundancy and peace-of-mind, especially in the event of backup corruption or a catstrophic scenario (failed backup disk, a fire, theft, etc.)

Thanks for the advice Bobbo, I will start resetting the 2 hourlies once per week.  I do have 3 different external drives and a variety of schemes wich is why I did not want to have to set them up again.  I must admit though, I am a bit lazy when it it comes to this sort of thing.  Probably because in almost 30 years, I have never lost a drive (touchwood), unlike my girlfriend and hers Macs which seem to lose hardrives as a fashion statement.

Thanks!  Worked great for me, too.

I was scared to death for a minute because the day before I lost an entire drive.  Next day I couldn't find any backups.  All good now.
