Brian, welcome to these user forums.

To migrate a backup image from one computer to a different one, the steps you need to perform are as follows (in outline).

  1. Make a full disk backup (including all partitions, hidden or otherwise) of your Optiplex 745 system to an external backup drive.
  2. Create the Acronis bootable Rescue Media and the Acronis Universal Restore media
  3. Boot the HP 425 system using the Acronis bootable Rescue Media with the external backup drive connected.
    Check that you can see the HP internal drive and your external backup drive, and know which is which!
  4. Restore your full disk backup to the HP 425 internal disk drive but do not attempt to boot into Windows yet.
  5. Shutdown the HP system, disconnect your external backup drive.
  6. Boot the HP system using the Acronis Universal Restore media and let this attempt to prepare the migrated backup to work on the new HP hardware.  Note: you may need to provide additional device drivers if these are needed for the HP system.
  7. Restart the HP system and boot into Windows.

Note: If you are moving an OEM version of Windows from the Dell to the HP system, then you will need to re-activate this as OEM versions cannot be moved to different hardware.

ok step 6 is the part i am a bit confused on

when i boot with universal restore the impression i am getting is that it may not work unless i add some drivers or something???

every new pc with different hardware i need to add drivers???

how do i add these drivers and where do i find them e.g for the hp 425 laptop???

try{if (typeof(lpcurruser) == 'undefined') lpcurruser = ''; if (document.getElementById('lpcurruserelt') && document.getElementById('lpcurruserelt').value != '') { lpcurruser = document.getElementById('lpcurruserelt').value; document.getElementById('lpcurruserelt').value = ''; } if (typeof(lpcurrpass) == 'undefined') lpcurrpass=''; if (document.getElementById('lpcurrpasselt') && document.getElementById('lpcurrpasselt').value != '') { lpcurrpass = document.getElementById('lpcurrpasselt').value; document.getElementById('lpcurrpasselt').value = ''; } var lploc=1;var lponlyfill=1;var lpdontsubmit=1;lpcurruser = ''; lpcurrpass = '';}catch(e){}
try{if (typeof(lpcurruser) == 'undefined') lpcurruser = ''; if (document.getElementById('lpcurruserelt') && document.getElementById('lpcurruserelt').value != '') { lpcurruser = document.getElementById('lpcurruserelt').value; document.getElementById('lpcurruserelt').value = ''; } if (typeof(lpcurrpass) == 'undefined') lpcurrpass=''; if (document.getElementById('lpcurrpasselt') && document.getElementById('lpcurrpasselt').value != '') { lpcurrpass = document.getElementById('lpcurrpasselt').value; document.getElementById('lpcurrpasselt').value = ''; } var lploc=2;var lponlyfill=1;var lpdontsubmit=1;lpcurruser = ''; lpcurrpass = '';}catch(e){}

Brian, Universal Restore works by simply preparing the target system to work with generic drivers for the most part where these are provided by your Windows OS via device detection at boot time, so you can use AUR without adding any additional device drivers at all.

You only need to provide specific device drivers if AUR reports that it cannot deal with a device on the target system that would prevent it from being able to boot.  You would need to go visit the HP Support website and download the necessary device drivers for your laptop where these will be listed according to the Windows OS version you are going to be using.

Note: There is no need to try to include every possible different device driver that is available for your HP 425 laptop, the only drivers that may be needed would be for the motherboard chipset or for the disk controller used in the laptop,   The other caveat here is that both systems should be set to use the same disk controller mode in the BIOS, i.e. both use SATA or AHCI.

ok thanks a lot hope to try it tomorrow and i will let you know

try{if (typeof(lpcurruser) == 'undefined') lpcurruser = ''; if (document.getElementById('lpcurruserelt') && document.getElementById('lpcurruserelt').value != '') { lpcurruser = document.getElementById('lpcurruserelt').value; document.getElementById('lpcurruserelt').value = ''; } if (typeof(lpcurrpass) == 'undefined') lpcurrpass=''; if (document.getElementById('lpcurrpasselt') && document.getElementById('lpcurrpasselt').value != '') { lpcurrpass = document.getElementById('lpcurrpasselt').value; document.getElementById('lpcurrpasselt').value = ''; } var lploc=1;var lponlyfill=1;var lpdontsubmit=1;lpcurruser = ''; lpcurrpass = '';}catch(e){}
try{if (typeof(lpcurruser) == 'undefined') lpcurruser = ''; if (document.getElementById('lpcurruserelt') && document.getElementById('lpcurruserelt').value != '') { lpcurruser = document.getElementById('lpcurruserelt').value; document.getElementById('lpcurruserelt').value = ''; } if (typeof(lpcurrpass) == 'undefined') lpcurrpass=''; if (document.getElementById('lpcurrpasselt') && document.getElementById('lpcurrpasselt').value != '') { lpcurrpass = document.getElementById('lpcurrpasselt').value; document.getElementById('lpcurrpasselt').value = ''; } var lploc=2;var lponlyfill=1;var lpdontsubmit=1;lpcurruser = ''; lpcurrpass = '';}catch(e){}

concerning the sata and ahci mode

i checked the hp 425 and it is saying sata device mode is set on ahci

when i check on the dell optiplex it says it is on normal mode and not legacy mode......does that mean ahci???

Brian, just doing a Google search on PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_4396&SUBSYS_1475103C gives a page of hits showing that this is a PCI to USB Host Controller, which in turn suggests that you are using such a device and therefore you should consult the web site for the manufacturer / vendor of the product you are using.

It looks like I'll be attempting a system restore to a different machine.  One of my pc's has died - power supply failure - and we're looking at moving over to a new pc.  The old pc is an Acer.  The new pc will most likely be a Dell.  I'm sure we did not create a Universal Restore disk for the old machine before it crashed.  Thus, the old machine is dead, but, I can most likely put the hard drive in a docking station attached to the new machine.  I'm guessing I'll see difficulties with the Acer Windows license vs the Dell Windows license and the whole activation scheme.  I know Dell has decent resources for downloading the chipset drivers, shouldn't have much issues there.

So, not having a Universal Restore disk pre-prepared for the old disk, will this be an issue?

i figured out that much but i have no idea where to find such a driver

i checked on hp website and even on google and can't seem to find it.......

try{if (typeof(lpcurruser) == 'undefined') lpcurruser = ''; if (document.getElementById('lpcurruserelt') && document.getElementById('lpcurruserelt').value != '') { lpcurruser = document.getElementById('lpcurruserelt').value; document.getElementById('lpcurruserelt').value = ''; } if (typeof(lpcurrpass) == 'undefined') lpcurrpass=''; if (document.getElementById('lpcurrpasselt') && document.getElementById('lpcurrpasselt').value != '') { lpcurrpass = document.getElementById('lpcurrpasselt').value; document.getElementById('lpcurrpasselt').value = ''; } var lploc=1;var lponlyfill=1;var lpdontsubmit=1;lpcurruser = ''; lpcurrpass = '';}catch(e){}

toejam, assuming that your old Acer PC is a standard desktop / tower machine, you should be able to replace the power supply fairly cheaply and get it back up and running, providing nothing else has died with the PSU.  I have replaced loads of power supplies over the years and undo 4 screws holding it to the case and disconnect the web of connections take around 5 minutes.  I pay around £20 (UK sterling) for a replacement PSU.

You will need a Universal Restore disk or USB stick to move to a Dell PC, plus if your Windows is the OEM branded version, you will also need a new license / activation as the OEM Windows are non-transferable.

Brian, the missing PCI to USB Host controller driver should not prevent you from booting the system - worse case simply unplug the device if this is an add-on card.  If it is a part of the motherboard, then it should be included in the chipset drivers.

Hi,

I've been using acronis 2015 (and earlier) to backup & restore from a synology nas at home for years. For the first time I tried out what you're speaking of above ^^ and regardless of whether I use a CD/DVD or USB stick as the boot media, when universal restore searches the NAS for the files to restore (or sometimes after it finds them), there is a core dump on the linux that lives beneath everything.

I've read a number of threads about similar instances but not seen any useful answers. Did 2015 universal restore work? My system is somewhat vanilla, but I hate going forward (updating to w10 for CPU support and because my PC is beginning to have some basic problems, not software) if I can't go back.

Sorry if I'm off-topic here and please feel free to either tell me or just move my reply to some more appropriate place. If I were told that 2017 definitely works on bare metal moves to different hardware from a NAS then I'd buy it, but at this point, I'd like to hear that or that I just don't know how to make any type of standalone boot media work to the point where it restores successfully when booted form it. By the way, this is also true for same machine restore (when not moving to a new box).

Many thanks

Mickey

Mickey, what exactly are you doing that gives rise to "when universal restore searches the NAS for the files to restore (or sometimes after it finds them), there is a core dump on the linux that lives beneath everything. "

Universal Restore shouldn't be searching for anything to restore and is only used after a normal restore has been done using the standard Acronis rescue media to the new hardware which it will then start to prepare to work on that new hardware.

Have you followed the steps that I outlined in my initial post #1 in this thread?

Hi and thanks for the response:

The difference from what I've done and what you've listed are that you are saying to use a (maybe usb-attached-drive) local attached drive for the backups? Am I understanding that? Mine wouldn't fit on anything other than the 3 or 4 TB NAS in this place. When I click on OK and it goes off looking for , well, whatever it's looking for, it crashes every time.

At this point, I had read another post about how the built-in utils of 2017 TrueImage are working, and I for 25 bucks, I gave it a shot, and amazingly enough (after years of watching acronis utilities not work) they're working.

Anyway, thanks again,

Mick
