What if my external drive is off at a scheduled backup time?

Thread needs solution

I prefer to keep my external backup drive disconnected from my computer most of the time --- to minimize the chances of the files on it being corrupted by viruses, etc.

What would happen if it is off-line when a backup is scheduled?

Does TIH tell me in advance of the scheduled time?

This question applies to both TIH 2015 and TIH 2013. Do they behave the same way?

Chrisopher, if your external drive is disconnected or powered off when ATIH tries to run a scheduled backup task then put simply, the task will fail and depending on what error handling options you have specified it will either try to run the task again (and again...) or just miss the scheduled action.

There are options that you should be able to set to try to handle this situation.

See the ATIH 2015 User Guide: Scheduling where one of the Advanced settings is shown:

  • If you schedule a backup to a USB flash drive or validation of a backup that is located on a USB flash drive, one more check box appears: Run when the current destination device is attached. Selecting the check box will let you perform a missed operation when the USB flash drive is attached if it was disconnected at the scheduled time.

Steve, thank you

But my destination device is a USB external hard drive, not a USB flash drive.

Does TI2015 let me perform a missed operation when the HD is next connected if the HD is disconnected at the scheduled time?

Chris, the verbage of the user guide is a little misleading and my understanding is that 'USB flash drive' will also include USB hard drives.
