Old Backup HDD full, Bought new one and Acronis doesn't see it

Thread needs solution

Thank you in advance - a newb

I successfully cloned my new 1TB hd in my Lenovo X220

The Hitachi drive I had been using as back up is A) still being sought after by Acronis for backup

B) the new Seagate 500 GB I installed and went through the process of Add a new drive isn't being recognized by Acronis

C) I have run the add a new drive 3X, selecting the GUID (not sure why actually)

D) When I get to the part when it says "PLUG IN YOUR EXTERNAL USB DRIVE, I do so having installed the new drive in a external drive case

E) Nevertheless, it does not let me proceed, even though the light is blinking like it sees it, but my only choice is actually cancel.

Dumb questions

1) Is GUID the wrong choice?

2) Should I format this new drive as NTFS?

3) My source (remember this is a cloned 1TB drive) states Discs and Partitions 66.8GB of data selected Partitions Originals (C:), System (E:) while up at the top left is states THIS COMPUTER (D) and below that E:\

4)And of course because Acronis doesn't see the NEW external, it's creating a custom destination 3.2GB of 9.7GB FREE in Partition E with a nice note that states "It's not recommended to back up a partition onto itself" Yes, thank you

I'm certain this is not a complex fix, but maybe this helps. Windows does not recogize the new external drive when it's plugged in either, which sorta leads me to think it needs to be formatted. HOWEVER, when inspecting the device manager, it finds it and clearly states ST500LM0-21-1KJ152 USB device

Old Geezer here so be gentle boys (and ladies)

Thank you in advance

Edward, welcome to these user forums.

I am not sure that I fully understand the situation here, so please excuse my seeking some clarification of what exactly you are doing / have done so far?

Let's start with the basics first:  What version / build of ATIH are you using?  Is this ATIH 2017 build 5554 which is the latest available?
What version of Windows OS are you running on your Lenovo X220 laptop and what drive is physically installed inside the laptop?
When you say: "I successfully cloned my new 1TB hd in my Lenovo X220" do you actually mean you cloned the drive to another drive by using the Acronis Clone Wizard to create an identical copy of the drive - or do you really mean that you created a backup image of the laptop drive?

You appear to have possibly three different drives here: a new 1TB drive inside the laptop, an Hitachi backup drive now full?, and a Seagate 500GB drive that you are connecting via USB in a drive caddy case?  Is this correct?

If the Seagate 500GB drive is only going to be used as a new backup drive to take over from your full Hitachi drive, then you do not need to do any 'Add disk' type operations using ATIH - that is only needed when installing a new internal drive that you are going to be restoring a backup image to.

For a new backup drive, it should be sufficient to simply connect the drive to your laptop and then use Windows Disk Management to format the drive if it was not already provided as formatted.  For a 500GB drive then NTFS is a normal choice for the formatting - GPT formatted drives are really intended for drives larger than 2TB in size.

If you have existing backup tasks that were previously pointed to your old Hitachi backup drive, then you should go back into these tasks and reselect the target / destination backup drive for the task to pick up the new Seagate drive.

Hello Edward,

Tell me, is this 500GB drive an SSHD?  If it is you will not be able to use it as a storage drive.  These Seagate SSHD's insist on being the boot device or system disk.   I know this from my own experience with them.

Edward, welcome to these user forums.

----THANK YOU STEVE

E: Yep latest version, latest build, Win7 Pro, the 1TB is installed in the machine, Yes, I cloned that 1TB drive using Acronis Clone wizard.

You appear to have possibly three different drives here: (A)a new 1TB drive inside the laptop, (B)a Hitachi backup drive now full?, and (C)a Seagate 500GB drive that you are connecting via USB in a drive caddy case?  Is this correct?

E:That is correct. I added the letters to keep it easy. The (B) drive was the one I cloned. It had a little space left so I used it for a few days until disk (C) arrived. My goal was to keep disk(B) as yet another emergency backup.

If the Seagate 500GB drive is only going to be used as a new backup drive to take over from your full Hitachi drive, then you do not need to do any 'Add disk' type operations using ATIH - that is only needed when installing a new internal drive that you are going to be restoring a backup image to.

E: OK That I didn't know. So a big thank you

E:It ((C) did not arrive formatted. For some reason I thought I read that if Acronis didn't find a format it would automatically do so, so that is likely an error by me. So it sounds like the FIRST STEP is to format the (C) drive as NTFS. I will do that now and report back.

If you have existing backup tasks that were previously pointed to your old Hitachi backup drive, then you should go back into these tasks and reselect the target / destination backup drive for the task to pick up the new Seagate drive.

E: Can you give me a little more instruction on where/how to do this please?

To the other posters, it is not a SSD. It is a standard format 500GB 720 RPM HDD

Edward, for the last question, it is as simple as just selecting your backup task then clicking on the Source and Destination panels shown in the main / right side of the application window.  When you click on each of these, it will show you what you originally selected and allow you to confirm that this is still correct or to change it if needed.

Thanks Steve for all your advice.

It's doing a SLOW format so I am only up to 15% since the last reply, Will let you know if I get lost again.

I truly appreciate your guidance
