[ISSUE] Try and decide won't work
ATIH b6027
Today I tried to use Try and Decide after a long time.
However I cannot use it anymore.
When I try to start it, it says it cannot be used along with Acronis Startup Manager, which seems strange for me because I was not even aware it is activated.
Secondly even after I successfully deactivated Acronis Startup Manager Try and Decide fails upon initialisation.
How to solve this?

GPT disk? If so, as far as I know from other forum posts, it is still not working on GPT disks.

Supported storage media
- Hard disk drives*
- Solid State Drives (SSD)
- Networked storage devices
- FTP servers**
- CD-R/RW, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R (including double-layer DVD+R), DVD+RW, DVD-RAM, BD-R, BD-RE
- USB 1.1 / 2.0 / 3.0, eSATA, FireWire (IEEE-1394) and PC card storage devices
* Limitations on operations with dynamic and GPT disks:
- Creation of Acronis Secure Zone on dynamic disks is not supported.
- Recovery of a dynamic volume as a dynamic volume with manual resizing is not supported.
- Try&Decide® cannot be used for protecting dynamic disks.
- "Clone disk" operation is not supported for dynamic disks.
** An FTP server must allow passive mode file transfers. Acronis True Image 2016 splits a backup into files with a size of 2GB when backing up directly to an FTP server.
The firewall settings of the source computer should have Ports 20 and 21 opened for the TCP and UDP protocols to function. The Routing and Remote Access Windows service should be disabled.

oh dear... forgot that GPT is too old /sarcasm :) this post from Anna is even from 2011, so she was right about "takes very long time".
Does Try and Decide make a Secure Zone? This would irritate me as it asked me to disable this feature.
"Try&Decide® cannot be used for protecting dynamic disks." I don't see there is limit for GPT and Try and Decide in the notes but the Answer back then from Anna was pretty clear.

Seems like GPT issues are still there... https://forum.acronis.com/forum/97308?page=2
Not sure about the secure zone - never personally tried either of them (yet). These are the only limitations listed:
http://www.acronis.com/en-us/support/documentation/ATI2016/index.html#2…
Limitations in using Try&Decide
If you use Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 10, please, be aware that in the Try mode the program may use free disk space quite intensively, even when your computer is idle. This is due to housekeeping activities such as indexing that run in the background.
Please note that while working in the Try mode you will experience slowing down of the system performance. Furthermore, the process of applying changes may take a long time, especially if you leave the Try mode turned on days on end.
Please be aware that Try&Decide cannot track changes in disk partitions, so you will be unable to use the Try mode for virtual operations with partitions such as resizing partitions or changing their layout. In addition, you must not use the Try&Decide and disk defragmentation or disk error checking utilities at the same time, because this can irreparably corrupt the file system, as well as make the system disk unbootable.
When the Try mode is started, you won't be able to use the previously activated Acronis Startup Recovery Manager. Rebooting the computer in the Try mode will allow you to use Acronis Startup Recovery Manager again.
Try&Decide and Nonstop Backup cannot work simultaneously. Starting the Try mode suspends Nonstop Backup. Nonstop Backup will resume after you stop the Try mode.
When the Try mode is started, you won't be able to use the "Hibernate" power saving mode.
Try&Decide cannot be used for protecting dynamic disks.
Try&Decide cannot work when a partition in your system is encrypted with BitLocker.

Hi Karl,
In my tests, I had the opposite problem. I can't get Try&Decide to stop and discard changes. I tried it on 2 different systems. One of the systems had a clean install of Windows 10 latest build to rule out conflicts with installed programs. After the reboot to discard changes, the Try&Decide wizard reports that it is off but the storage for virtual changes continues to grow.
I also tested the Acronis Startup Recovery Manager. On both systems after activating the ASRM, the MSR and EFI system partitions have drive letter assignments in Windows explorer.
I think Acronis should disable these features on UEFI GPT systems. I don't know how someone would resolve either of these issues without performing a recovery.

mm Joey, that's rather irritating :|
Wonder why it doesn't work for me and I got these repetitive errors. I will try this on a different computer with GPT / UEFI disks.

"I think Acronis should disable these features on UEFI GPT systems. I don't know how someone would resolve either of these issues without performing a recovery."
Instead I hope they are finally solving their issues they have. The quoted post from Anna goes back to 2011. I think it is unacceptable to market a backup solution that is compatible with GPT / UEFI and Windows 10, while some of the features won't work with typical environments, like GPT, which is needed for Secure Boot since Windows 7, by the way.
Please Acronis get these things sorted. I am aware that you reserved rights to drop functionalities that are meanwhile included in the tools section of ATIH and so are not a part of the major product development.
On the other hand you gave hope to the users, that they might last a while by fixing issues with one of the Secure Zone issues in one of the ATIH 2016 patches. I am aware about that patch as me and other also reported this bug.
I think the try and decide feature is still very important and should get fixed, if GPT is really the issue for my problem or other ones problems.

Based on further testing, the issue I'm experiencing only occurs on Windows 10 UEFI GPT systems after the Acronis Startup Recovery Manager has been activated. Prior to activating ASRM, TnD functioned correctly on my test Windows 10 system. After activating and deactivating ASRM, TnD fails to discard changes and the storage for virtual changes will not stop growing. Shutting down the system results in an unbootable system.
On a Windows 8.1 Update UEFI GPT system ASRM and TnD functioned correctly.

Hello Joey, thanks for your investigations! I think I will need to test this aswell in a VM. I do remember that once actived ASRM a longer time ago, while it was bugged and lead to an unbootable system. I cannot recall what happend then. I think I recovered it with ATIH, and so ASRM or traces should not be active on my computer. At least this is what I can recall.
for me status is as current: launching ASRM in Windows, it now says it is disabled, starting TnD, i can activate it but it states "failed". After i try TnD again for the second time, it says ASRM and TnD cannot be activated same time. So it seems like TnD is trying to activate ASRM, fails and so ASRM is partly activated. I have no idea how TnD works. It would be great to have more insights about this problem and the operational side of TnD and ASRM and how they are connected to each other @Dmitry or anyone?

In Windows 10 on my Dell 1747 Studio laptop "Try and decide" gives the message "Failed to start Try&Decide".
It used to work so no idea why not now.

Hello Allan,
Please refer to the following thread. If the issue still persist, it's better to raise a support ticket.
Thank you,

Thanks for the reply. It has fixed itself as of the last TI update.
