Migrate from 11.7 to 12 Best Practice? Instructions?
Hey there,
we are about to migrate 100+ Clients from V11.7 to 12.
Despite some time spent searching, i did not find any detailed instructions about how to go about this, just random KB Articles about compatibility etc.
So here are my questions:
1. Are there any how-tos on migration and update procedure?
2. Are there recommendations about how to uninstall v11.7 on 100+ Clients or do we have to do it via our own client management / scripting / figure something out?
3. As far as i understand, clients with 11.7 won't be able to communicate with a v12 Management Server. That means we would have to uninstall all clients, uninstall the Management Server, and then reinstall everything in v12? This would mean that we would have to do it in one shot and backups won't run during that time....
Can anyone shed some light on this?
Cheers

Will Acronis Backup Advanced 12 have a similar behaviour ?
The problem is not to migrate all machines and severs to 12 but Do i understand it right, that the vaults from 11.7 and vaults from 12 differ?
Can I read 11.7 vaults with V12?

Hi Sven,
AB12 doesn't support managed vaults at this time, future versions may have this feature including the Advanced edition.
Unfortunately you cannot handle ABA11.7 vaults/archives using AB12. Please see TIB compatibility in KB. It may work to browse TIB files created with ABA11.7 using the builtin Windows Explorer Plugin.

Hi Raphael,
as I know the linked KB article the question was addressing the future Acronis backup Advanced 12 as I wrote in the first line.
It would be an extreme drawback if the successor of a tool cannot read data written by the direct predecessor.

Ok, I am not an Acronis employee and don't have deep insight to future versions and upcoming features (including AB Advanced 12) but will ask the responsibles and report back.
Surely there will be backward compatibility to current ABA11.7 archives. They may upgraded to a newer format but I cannot say at this time, so stay tuned!

Hello Sven,
The current Acronis Backup 12 is not an Advanced version, which means its missing a lot of the features (true backup policies, groups, tapes, ASN, dedup, reports, etc) of the 11.7 Advanced product. This makes a direct upgrade from 11.7 to 12 very difficult.
For example, if you upgrade 5 Advanced agents which all have the same single policy, this will convert to 5 separate plans in the Acronis Backup 12 standard version. Plus, any centralized vault will be unsupported and the plans won't even transfer correctly.
So here is the situation when upgrading from 11.7 Advanced:
For Acronis Backup 12:
The recommendation is to uninstall the old version and reinstall. Preferably, with a separate server for the new v12 AMS so that you can stage the migration. If you need help with remote uninstall of a number of agents via script, let me know.
For Acronis Backup Advanced 12:
The current vision is the following (note that anything can change before release):
- You will launch the Advanced 12 installer on the Management Server Machine;
- This will upgrade the Management Server (move databases, policies etc. to the new formats);
- The new version Management Server will see all the old version agents, groups, storages, policies, etc. after installation;
- You will be able to see all your old version agents and they will continue backups, but you won't be able to manage the legacy plans or create new ones;
- You will be able to select all or a subset of the legacy agents and click an "Upgrade" button. This will remotely upgrade the versions of the selected agents to v12. They will keep the current policies and continue backup to the old archive chains (so you won't have to recreate full backups)
Again, the reason it doesn't work like this currently is because the current Acronis Backup 12 does not have the necessary Advanced features, despite now having a Mangament Server.

Igor, can you make any comments about when we can expect version 12 advanced to be released?

Hello Igor,
thanks for the clarification - This sounds very good for me.
My only interest is the migration from the 11.7 Advanced to the 12 Advanced edition.
Also from me the question: is there a planned release date?
Regards
Sven

Hello Sven,
I don't really have a date to share publically yet.
