Backup is corrupted, but you can still try to recover data from it.

Thread needs solution

My neighbor's backup failed when it ran last night. In looking at the log file (attached), it says - The following backups have been successfully created: "G:\My backups\My_partitions_full_b26_s1_v1.tib". Yet when it was doing the backup validation, it says - The backup is corrupted, but you can still try to recover data from it.
I thought there might be something wrong with the external hard drive that she was backing up to, so I ran Chkdsk. It found some errors and corrected them. I ran the backup again and the backup failed for the same reason. Still thinking there was an issue with the external hard drive, I formatted the drive and ran the backup again. Backup failed a third time for the same reason. At this point I'm thinking the external hard drive is bad. Before I go out and buy a new drive, is there anything else I should try?

Run chkdsk on all partitions of the source drive as well, it could be the the drive being backup is corrupted or failing.

You may wish to also perform the steps in the link below.

Okay. Will run the CHKDSK on her "C" drive. I had her run her other file backup programs last night to her external drive and they seem to have worked okay.

I attached her external drive to my computer and I'm able to access various files that were backed up using Acronis 2015 program.

If there are disk errors on her "C" drive, they you are indicating that maybe what's causing her problem. If there are errors found and they get corrected, then will try running the backup again. If it still fails, then will follow the trouble-shooting directions you provided. Thanks.

Yes, I am indicating that corruption on the source disk could be the issue.

Yes, your plan is sound.

It found no errors on the internal C:\ drive, so my next step is to try running the backup to her internal hard drive. I think she has enough space on her internal drive to accommodate the backup. One step at a time.

Ran the Memory test and it found errors. Next step is to determine which 4 GB Memory stick in her laptop has the errors, so that we can replace that bad stick.

Why would saving the backup to her internal hard drive not produce the file corruption error? If there are memory errors, I would have thought we would have gotten these file corruption errors.

I'm having this same problem. After having made many dozens of backups and backup validations using Acronis 2016, I was faced today with this error message for the first time.

I have been using Acronis rescue media for my backups and validations for years, and my backups have been stored in an external USB drive. Coincidentally or not, I performed a deletion of several old backup files on this external drive right before starting today's backup, but I doubt that this could have had any impact on the error.

I already ran a memory test with PC-Doctor5 for Windows and two errors were detected. I wonder if they may have any bearing on the issue being discussed. Here is a picture of the errors encountered by PC-Doc:

Thanks for any help provided.

Edited to add that I had some difficulty figuring out how to attach a picture to my post and ended up with this link... I can see different formats in other posts, but I still hope this works fine and would be glad to receive any guidance, if warranted... Thanks.

Hello LinYu, I am not familiar with the error output from PC-Doctor5 and would recommend running a Windows Memory Test - see webpage How to Test Your Computer’s RAM for Problems for guidance on doing this.

To add images or other file attachments, simply expand the link below for File attachments and then click on the button to Choose file and navigate to where the file is located, then finally click on the Attach button to add it to your post.

Many thanks for your response, Steve. I will give a try to your suggestion and will report the results. Meanwhile, it's worth mentioning that I have completed a few more tests and here are the results:

- Made a validation of a backup file I had actually successfully used a couple days ago for restoring my system, and this file validation completed successfully;

- Also tried once again to validate the two backup files created today and they both failed for the second or third time;

- Before changing cables, which I was planning to try next, I checked all the USB connections and found that the USB cable end that connects the external drive to my USB hub appeared to be just a bit loosely inserted to the hub port, which I corrected;

- Then I did two more backups, which completed successfully, and performed their respective validation; they both validated successfully as well. However, the two initial backup files continue to deliver uncessfull validations, even after the corrected loose connection.

So now I have a new variable to consider: is it my system memory or was it just that poor connection of the drive to the hub? This is too important to leave unresolved, so I will do the memory test you recommend and also a couple more backup/validation tasks to see what comes out.

On the file attachments issue, I must be using a different version of the forum or whatever, the fact is I cann't see any button or link for the file attachments you mention. What am I missing? Here is a pic of what I see:

Thanks again.

Edited: I performed the Windows Memory Test Diagnostics and no issues seem to have been found. Here is the little piece of information Windows provied me at the end:

I will report back after doing a couple more backup/validations tasks.

LinYu, a poor connection for your USB drive / hub could certainly cause some strange problems!

See screen shot of where you can find the option for File attachments - this is lower down on the screen page than your image showed.

First and foremost, let me just say that I did perform two more backups and they both completed successfully, as did their validations. So, it seems that whatever went wrong may have been corrected, and that poor connection may very well have been the culprit. If this proves to be the case, so much better. Many thanks, anyway, for your kind and timely assistance.

On the attachment issue, I feel so much embarrassed... I looked intentively (or so I thought) and could not locate those two not so short words... I guess it never hit my mind that they could be outside of that top bar area where all the other options are located. Oh, well, let me face it, it must be either a case of mental blindness or a fact of old age... Or still a combination thereof... (Indeed!...)  :)

Have a great weekend!

LinYu, glad to hear all looks to be going OK again.  As to the age thing... welcome to the 'senior moments' club where lots of us spend time!
