Boot Disk/ATI Partition on Removable USB Drive

Thread needs solution

Hello all,

I have a USB removable hard drive, which is 500 gig. I would like to create a 1 gig FAT partition and then create an Acronis bootable drive out of it. The rest of the drive I would ike to make NTFS and store my Acronis full backups onto. This way I have my bootable drive and backup drive in one. Can this be done successfully?

Thanks,

Steve

Steve, this may be possible to do but it will depend on whether your system will recognise your USB HDD as a valid boot device, and how you will get the bootable Rescue Media written to the drive.

The Acronis Rescue Media Builder will not let you try to create the rescue media on a HDD drive - it expects to write to either optical or removable media.

What you may be able to do is to create a bootable USB memory stick of 1GB, then use ATIH to make a backup image of the USB stick and restore this to the 1GB partition on your external USB HDD.  You could then use a partition manager to create the NTFS partition on the same drive.

You would need to test that a) the USB HDD would then boot the rescue media from the FAT partition, and b) that you can access the NTFS partition to either write or read from this in order to Backup or Restore.

Steve,

Thanks for the info. This worked perfectly, and now I have my bootable drive in the first partition, and my backups on the second partition. One device instead of two.

Thanks,

Steve

Steve, thanks for the feedback, glad to hear that this worked OK for you.
