Acronis Mobile Backup Server

Thread needs solution

Since I updated to True Image 2017 on Windows 10 I've had to go into Services and disable automatic start for the following services:

Acronis Mobile Backup Server

Acronis Mobile Backup Status Server

This is due to the fact that they constantly eat up 40% CPU if they are left enabled. I don't use the mobile backup feature and wish there was an easier way to say disable this feature since I dont intend on using it and certainly dont want it making everything else super slow on my computer.

You can use these scripts.  I can only upload .txt files here but rename them from .txt to .bat.  Then double click the .bat file and follow the prompts.  You don't need to keep running it either, it's a one time thing (unless you stop them, then start them and want to stop them again).  It just automates the process.

Basically, they stop the mobile services and nonstop service and set them to disabled so you don't have to do this manually.  One stops them, one enables them. If you don't want to disable the nonstop backup service (if you have a nostop backup configured), then just put a double colon in front of it "::"

You're welcome!

Just also a reminder every time you update True Image the Mobile services get reactivated.

I had to to rerun this script after I was prompted to install an update and did so.

Good call - yes, most updates reset the services and the customer experience "opt-in" back to defaults (running).  That's why I scripted these for myself... so I can just double click them off again and not have to fiddle with computer management.  Not something that needs to be done very often, but still handy to have available when needed.

And thank you for adding that! I've had Acronis for many years and I still prefer the earlier versions where they didn't try to help me so much :) A nice wizard asking how I want to use the product and then truning off things I'm not going to use actually would be helpful (if you are listening Acronis). I saw 10 of those mobile services running before executing the script. Thank you both...

You're talking to the user forum here.  I would always submit feedback through the app and open a technical case with Acronis to report/record the issues so they get properly addressed. We pass on feedback in the forum, but it's not official as compared to the feedback you submit and the tickets you open with Acronis directly.  What we can do here in the user forum is try to help work-a-round issues, but that's about it.

I am new to Acronis.

I am having the same problem:

Thank You for your solution, BUT such contortions should not be necessary in a Top-Shelf Program.

There should be a setting within the program to do this. Additionally, under no circumstance should such processes consume so much CPU.

Disabling the Mobile Services in Windows Service Manager did not do the trick.

On my system they consume 98% CPU.

I am saddened to learn that Acronis does not have a Support person monitor this forum or that the MVPs/Gurus or whatever do not not have a direct line of communication to Acronis Support for such issues. I expect more from what is said to be a Quality Company. For this alone, Acronis goes down three notches on my Quality Company Scale.

The best way to get some action on this is to make you point in an in app feedback. They do monitor in-app feeback.

I have ATI 2017 on 5 machines and have not experienced this problem. Maybe I am just lucky.

It's disappointing that Acronis can't give us more direct support rather than  just complaining about a problem like this through feedback channels only.

My desktop is rendered unusable as the CPU meter goes to 98% when these services start up. At a time when I need to get a lot of work done, it made me think about ditching Acronis which until now has been a wonderful reliable backup product.

Thanks for this recommendation. I look forward to eliminating the problem of my computer slowing to crawl speed every day and having to go into Task manager to eliminate the problem.

Hello Everyone,

The issue with mobile_backup_server.exe and mobile_backup_status_server.exe consuming all available CPU resources in certain cases is known to us and is expected to be addressed in one of the next updates for Acronis True Image 2017.

Regards,

Slava

@Bobbo_3C0X1 - Thank you so much for providing the script.

I had the same issues and honestly, this is something Acronis should be compensating you for providing the script.

More importantly, I have not subscribed to the mobile service and the damn thing chews up my processing power and cuts my WLAN connection.

@Acronis - sneaky way to not enable customers to opt out. There is no excuse nowadays to program a little on/off switch. If you need any help in sorting this, there are some good freelancers available.

Cheers:)

Hello Slava,

Thank you for the information. When can we expect to receive the next update with this issue solved?

I have an i5 laptop with 12Gb Ram and its processing power went as low as a Pentium 486 due to this issue. Certainly, heading toward the year 2020 in 3 years time you'll understand that it is very frustrating to be working with such a slow system, due to the Acronis programming error. You will also notice from my other post, that the Acronis mobile backup server.exe cut my WLAN connection. Initially I thought it was my internet provider but as it turns out, it was not. So any speedy update on this issue would be appreciated.

Thanks

Jonny

I can't speak for the Acronis updates, but I've started a Google Drive repository on behalf of the MVP's for customized .bat scripts and tools that we put together in our own time.  I've added some additional "common" scripts that may come in useful as post backup scripts, or for automating some of these task items.

Hope they are useful for some of you in the meantime.

I have the same problem, have tried to follow your intructions, but it doesn't work and show the results as the uploaded  picture.Thank you for any further suggestion.

Hopefully this problem is fixed by build 6116 (at this stage only avaialbe for those with a subscription licence). An updated build for those with a perpetual licence is in the works - in another thread Ekaterina indicated it about a month away.

I've updated common service (stop/start) to include those added with the 2017 NG version that was just released.  These can be run on any version of Acronis 2015 to the current 2017 NG version.  Personally, I like my backup program running light and really look to the backup functionality of the PC as my main priority so I usually set everything except for the scheduler to stopped and disabled.  These are easy to customize to your own liking though as you can simply add double colons (::) to comment out something, or remove them to enable them

Bobbo - thank you again for continuing to help us (when this ability should actually be configurable).

Octopuss - I agree 100%. If you make a bad product, recognize it and then elect to only "fix it" for those in future versions or perp licenses... really?

I have recently purchased another backup program that I am running alongside, it is light, inexpensive and seems to do the job.

So as I continue to test, I may actually abandon a longtime friend - one that has saved me numerous times. It is also the product I recommended at work and we started using (for limited peronal backups). However I have to be honest, while I like the new features - this code base seems to be on a downward trajectory.

  • That whole thing about looking for old backups because they are still part of the DB even after being deleted
  • The backup versioning roll over clean up seems to never work for me correctly. Maybe once or twice then breaks.
  • The inability to not have 50 things running in the background. Look, I just want to do manual ad-hoc backups. Some may want scheduled and constant backups. I may one day too, so lets us configure it the way we want to use the software. If I'm not doing mobile device backups, why run all that junk.

Just my opinions, I'm a bit disappointed.

Octopuss, build 6116 or a later build is promised for all current ATIH 2017 build 5554 users (who do not wish to migrate to the New Generation product) - Slava posted in multiple forum topics a few days ago to say this is expected in about a month, there was also a statement that us non NG users will continue to receive updates for our product.

Hi All

There is a simple and easy way to diable both of these services permenantly through Windows. Please follow these steps (for Windows 10):

1. Open the Start Menu > Type Services > Open the Services Console

2. Click the "name" column to sort the services into alphabetical order and therefore sort Acronis near the top of the list

3. Look for "Acronis Mobile Backup Server" and " Acronis Mobile Backup Status Server"

4. Once found right click > Properties > General tab

5. In the drop down menu next to "Startup type" choose "Disabled" > click "Apply"

6. Repeat step 4-5 for the other service

This stopped the services eating 100% of my CPU and making my computer VERY noisy.

Regards
