AB12 Application-aware backup credentials issue

Thread needs solution

Hi

I'm trying to apply an existing SQL-server aware backup plan to a new SQL server VM from the AB12 Backup Console.

Adding the plan to the new SQL give me this warning:

"Cannot enable application backup on the selected machines due to environment issues.  To view the issues, click here."

So I clicked there and added domain admin credentials in the format 'DOMAIN\USERNAME' but it fails with this...

"The specified user does not have enough rights to create an application-aware backup. User Account Control is enabled in the guest system and this user is not a built-in administrator."

The user is a Domain Admin, UAC is disabled, and the user is not a built-in admin.

I've even tried creating a completely new backup plan but that fails with the same messages.

What else do I need to check?

Hi Neil,

can you please check you VM settings for Guest OS. Had a similar issue when Guest OS setting was set incorrect (Windows Threshold was set for a Windows Server 2012 R2 VM).

Otherwise some more information is found in the logs?

Hi Raphael,

The guest OS is set to Windows Server 2012 even though the OS is 2012 R2. I don't have an 'R2' option in the VM Guest OS settings.

One thing I did notice was that VMTools was out of date on the VM. I've updated that, but still no luck.

Where are the logs for this specific failure? The only log files I can find are those specifically relating to the backup processes.

Setting Windows Server 2012 is OK since VMware doesn't supply the R2 setting.

There should be related loggings in AMS\ManagementServer*.log.

Have you checked the documentation for Protecting applications Prerequisites and Required user rights?

Apologies for the delay in replying.

The SQL VM machine isn't yet live production, so this issue has been put to the back of the queue for the time being, but will be revisited in the next few weeks.

I'll have a look through the linked documentation at a later time.

Cheers

Neil

Hey Guys,

Having the same issue with all my DCs. The app detection from the overview tab is working but my credentials are not working when creating the backup plan.

I've also checked the doc help and have disabled UAC, agent is installed. Tried the domain admin account and others domain admin accounts, no luck.

And the logs don't show anything wrong:

Update : Just noticed the servers are listed twice. One recognized as an ESXi VM and the other as a VM where the agent is installed. A bit stupid to get duplicated VMs... Anyway, I tried to create the backup plan on the VM created by the agent and I'm getting the following error:

Update 2: I had to remove the agent and reinstall it to get the box asking for Credentials. I entered the domain Administrator account and it's now connected. The 1st bug is we cannot change the credentials once it fails, so we need to reinstall the agent again and again. The 2nd bug is that it's not working with another account who has Domain Admin privilieges... 3rd bug is when deploying the agent it hangs at 97%. In reality, it's trying to connect the agent to the server. If I do it by manualy, the task finishes.

I had the same issue when I started out with AB12. I logged a fault and one of the support reps connected to my servers to assist in fixing the issue. We initially thought it might be due to a Exchange 2010 DAG.   However, after lots of fraustration I ended up uninstalling AB12 on the problematic server and resintalling it from scratch. Never had any problems since.

I have included a link to my original support request below.
