best practice szenario to backup windows server 2012 (DC) with hyper-v and a win 10 client

Thread needs solution

HI all,

i have a backup server and a backup workstation licence in order to backup a windows 2012 r2 Domain Controller and a Windows 10 Client.

I want to install management concole on the windows 10 client in order to administrate acronis from here, to backup win 10 itself and the windows server 2012. how do i proceed? Install the backup workstation on win 10 with management console and agend? on windows 2012 server i use the same installer but choose agend only and point to the management console windows 10 PC?

last question is, on that 2012 server two VM are running in hyper-v. those machines will not be part of the backup (except the VHD files), right? no recovery of those ruinning VM's?

thank you

Hi,

Concerning the setup question: your assumptions are correct - you can install the default components including Acronis Management Server onto Win10 client which will act as backup server. After that either install only Acronis Backup Agent for Windows onto Win2k12 machine via running the installer locally OR you can also install this agent remotely from web console interface via "Add" button from Devices list.

Concerning the 2nd question: If you don't install Agent for Hyper-V alongside with Agent for Windows onto Win2k12 machine, then you will only be able to back up the host itself including all data on the volumes (and thus .vhd files), but you won't control the VM backups, so recovery process for these VMs would be by first restoring .vhd(x) and configuration files from the host image backup (from "entire machine" backup). In order to use agent-less VM backup on this host via Agent for Hyper-V you'll need "Virtual Host" license (note that this license also includes ability to protect the host itself, not only VMs).

Thank you.

Hi Vasily,

thanks for clearing that up. Uoo bad, i now have a server license purchased, additional "virtual host license" would not make sense now.

Concerning licensing: i have to register the licenses in management console for all the machines i want to back up, or is this handeled by acronis account which i saw in some acronis software? thanks

Hi,

There are 2 types of licenses: subscription (with expiration date) and perpetual (permanent) ones. The subscription licenses can be retrieved from your Acronis account automatically when you go to Settings->Licenses->Add keys - there is an option to "Sync with Acronis account" which will retrieve these licenses and will activate them (start the expiration). The perpetual licenses should be added also from Settings->Licenses->Add keys for all machines you want to back up. The licenses assignment to protected machines/devices is done automatically when you start first backup for the resource. You can also re-assign licenses from the same Settings->Licenses section, for example unassign from resource which doesn't need protection any more and thus make it available for some new resource.

Thank you.
