How Long to Format a 2TB External USB Drive?

Thread needs solution

I am using Partition Expert 2003, and started a Format operation on a WD 2TB external drive about 32 hours ago. Partition Expert does not show any progress indicator (I can't remember if it usually does). The drive light blinks on and off in various patterns, and the Partition Expert process shows, in the Processes tab of the Task Manager, as using 25% of CPU (machine is a dual-core, quad processor), so I assume that the process is going forward.

Any guesses as to how long it takes to format 2TB through the skinny USB pipe?

At what point should I conclude that the process has failed?

If I interrupt the process, am I correct in assuming that all that has been done is lost?

Hello fwarnoth!

Thank you for finding time to join us on Forum! I understand your concern and will do my best to address your question appropriately!

Unfortunately we cannot guarantee that Partition Expert 2003 will successfully migrate such amount of data and we cannot tell the estimated time for this operation: this product is very outdated, it's not developed, updated and supported anymore.

As a workaround I would suggest you to cancel current process and download the demo version of Migrate Easy. You can try to perform the operation of migration from Windows and see whether this solution suits you.

Acronis Migrate Easy 7.0 trial version has the following limitations:

  • Windows: all functions available, 15-days trial period
  • Bootable media: all features disabled (no scenario can be performed)

All the functions are described in the User's Guide, so feel free to check it, you may find it useful.

Should you need anything else or have any further questions - feel free to contact us at your earliest convenience, we will be happy to help you!

Thank you!
