Backup fails or does not validate

Thread needs solution

I am running 2017 version on a new laptop W10 UEFI and that means got disk. My backup does not complete successfully and or will not validate.

To create a good backup you may have to go to Ctrl Panel Admin Tools Services and run services as administrator. Go to Volume Shadow Copy , right click it, Properties, Set start mode to disabled. Your backup will run and validate.

After this you should change start mode to manual. If you do not restore points and various other functions will not work.

I have worked hours with support on this and they promised to get with developers. In my opinion this is a severe program design defect. To expect the average user to go through this is wrong and asking for trouble.

THIS PROBLEM DOES NOT OCCUR ON MY W10 MBR desktop so not everyone will have this problem!

Gilbert, from the description you have posted above, it sounds very much like you have a problem on this particular laptop with the Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) and you are able to bypass this by stopping VSS system wide.

The alternative approach is to just disable VSS for an individual backup task, instead of the whole system, as follows:

  1. Open the folder where your backups settings are saved: C:\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Scripts
  2. Each file there stores settings for particular backup job. Open files one-by-one in Notepad, or open latest modified file (if you have just modified your task), until you find the one that has backup name on 5th line, e.g. MyBackups
  3. Click Edit - Replace and replace use_vss="true" with use_vss="false"
  4. Save changes and close the file

This will cause Acronis to use their own snapshot method as used in earlier versions of the product.

My problem is solved. I have run all types of backup and everyting went as it should. Volume Shadow Copy had been set back to Manual startup property again which is the default.

I did run one while it was still disabled and surprisingly it ran without error. Not sure why but obviously I do not have the source code :-)

I had GREAT sipport help with Remote Ssssions using Team Viewer.

The solution was to redownload the latest build istall file and run it selecting repair option.

I should have thought of and tried the solution first, Do the easy things before the hard :-)

Gilbert, thanks for giving feedback and glad to hear that the repair install resolved the issues for you.

Well thanks for that but I am not about to mess with scripts. Too many chances to mess things up. NO ORDINARY user should be asked to do that in any case. As you can see in my other post ti is working now. Volume Shadow Copy does not and never did have a problem. It worked fine for other backup programs that required i . On the other hand, glad it does not use its own VSS. In my opinion that is and always was a very bad idea.

Gilbert, in the 2017 New Generation product Acronis has simplified the ability to choose which snapshot product to use by Adding an option for this to the Advanced page tab allowing you to try different snapshot options without any need to edit backup scripts.

There is no such option in my version which is Acronis 2017 (Home??} or whatever but I see nothing about New Generation Product but there is no such option on the advance tab in my copy.

I found it in the scipt although not exactly where you said but as I said "I am not going to edit those and should not have tg and there is no such option in the home version of Advanced.

Gilbert, the option is in the new ATIH 2017 New Generation product - build 6616 so you won't see it in your older ATIH 2017 build 5554/5 version.

See the sticky post in this forum for the anouncement of the NG product.

There is a post in another thread inicating that they are working on a new build of ATI 2017 for perpetual licence owners. I think it says they are hoping to release it in about a month.

At this stage there is not a unitary installer file ... this may come in the future.

Uhhh, well $79.99 to uppgrade and that for only one year, NOT! I get the entire Office 365 for 99 dollars and a free Terabyte of Onedrive. I think I would even edit the script if I had to rather than pay that fee for practically nothing gained.

I have a three computer license for 2017 Home. Hard to justify more. Support has been great but some might wamt to use the Windows built in (No validation unfortunately) or the free Macrium Reflect (Validation and in many ways a better UI) than pay for Acronis, especially if more than one computer. By the way Office 365 is for up to 5 computers (I have 4) and unlimited mobile.
