Problems trying to recover

Thread needs solution

Hi,

I installed some windows maintenance that really messed up my system. So I decided to back it out by recovering from the prior nights backup. I created an Acronis Bootable CD and followed the process as documented in https://forum.acronis.com/system/files/forum/2016/12/128032/atih_2017_d… . The recover starts and everything seems to be fine. However it fails after about 1 1/4 hours with Recover Failed. Looking at the Log I see the following:

1. Info ... Operation "Recover" started

2. Info ... Recover Backup Archice From file: --- the backup file Ielected---

3. Info ... Pending operation 52 started: 'Clearing Disk'

4. Info ... Pendinng operation 14 started: 'Recovering partition sector by sector'   (NTFS 100 MB area I assume)

Then a minute or so later

5. Info ... Pendinng operation 14 started: 'Recovering partition sector by sector' (Primary area - 931.4 G I assume))

Then 1 hour and 16 minutes later

6. Error ... Index corrupted

7. Error ... Index corrupted

8. Info ... Failed to detect GRUB loader

9. Info ... An invalid sector size

10. Error ... Index corrupted

11. Error ... Index corrupted

12. Error ... Recover operation failed.

The errors seem to start at the very end of the recover. Does anyone know what the messages mean? What is a GRUB Loader? I've validated my backup via the Recover Validate Backup process so I know it's good. My PC is currently dead and I do not want to port to a new box at this time. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks..

Anthony, welcome to these user forums.

From reading some of the messages in your extract from the recovery log, it sounds like you may actually have a problem with the disk drive that you are restoring to.

The Index corrupted entries along with the restore switching to using sector-by-sector mode would suggest a problem with the drive.

The GRUB loader is a reference to the Acronis boot CD you are using unless you have a dual-boot system that has a Linux OS installed?

I would suggest checking what the actual make of disk drive you have and then going to the manufactureres web site and downloading any diagnostic utility programs they offer, i.e. SeaTools for Seagate tools, WD Lifeguard for WD drives etc  then running these tools against the drive to check for any serious drive errors.

If you have a spare disk drive of the same or very similar size, you could remove the original drive and replace with the spare then retry the restore again.

If you need more help, you can also open a Support Case with directly with Acronis Support who will try to help you with this obvious recovery issue.
