Acronis Active Protection Issues: Generate Ghost Drives! Screenshot Added.

Thread needs solution

I have already write to Tech Support, but open something also here.

I have this strange issues after upgrade to New Generation 1 months ago, when I discovered who is the guilty, I have simply disabled the Acronis Active Protection Services and issues is gone, hoping for a new build for fix this issues, after 1 months nothing happens, so prob only I have this strange Issues.

I have add a Screenshot where you can simple understand what happens.

Short Version:

If Active Protection Services is ON, after random seconds from BOOT, he begin to spawn tons of empty Ghost Drives with the name of my primary BOOT HD.

He begin with spawn I:

3 secs

spawn M:

5 secs

spawn N: and continue until he reach Y:

Is him at 100% because I have get this issues after upgrading to new generation, no others software changed, then for sure because if this services is Disabled, no issues at 100%. Is him the guilty. Because if I active this services get the issues,. deleted ghost with subst, disappear and popup again. Disabled the Services and terminate Acronis AP from Task Manager, Shield in Taskbar disappear. Issues is gone, no more Ghost Drives popup after I eradicate again with SUBST.

This prevent me to use a USB PenDrive or External HD, prevent me to map network drives (except Z:) and then in every program if I wrong to click the right partition, Program freezed.

If from My Computer exploring, I get the HD.JPG View added here. Green is my BOOT, Red is the Ghost Drives AAP generate. IF I click from My Computer a Ghost Drives, he is empty, any other action freeze explorer.exe.

For now I have simple disabled the Acronis Active Protection Service, but I want resolve this strange issues.

Hope anyone have ad advice to fix or Acronis Support understand what happens to me and fix this strange bug.

Fabio, welcome to these user forums.

This is a very strange problem and not one that I have seen reported by any other users, nor one that I have seen myself while using ATIH 2017 New Generation.

Please can you provide some more information on the background to your upgrade to the NG product?

What previous version of Acronis True Image did you have installed?

Was your previous version upgraded from one or more earlier versions of the product?

I am trying to understand if you have upgraded multiple times over the years on this system, i.e. from say 2013 to 2014 to 2015 to 2016 to 2017?  or combinations of similar products?

I would recommend doing a clean install of the 2017 NG product to see if that solves this problem with Ghost drives.

To do a clean install.

Uninstall Acronis normally using the control panel.

Download the Acronis Cleanup Tool (link in my signature below) - run this as Administrator.

Restart the computer to complete the action.

Reinstall 2017 NG.

Note: You can make a copy of your backup tasks by saving the contents of C:\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Scripts folder where these are held in .TIS (XML) files.

duplicate post removed.

Hello Fabio,

Thank you for reporting the issue. You will be contacted and we will investigate what happened. Please do not run cleanup tool and do not reinstall the program until then. Most probably something went wrong when you upgraded to the build 6116 and we need to know what.

Regards,

Slava

Hard to remember, I have started with Win8 -> 8.1 some time ago, in the meantime have change the PC without reinstall.

For sure 2015 -> uninstalled -> 2017 -> NG

I remember also have for a limited time the True Image bundle with Western Digital MyBook Edition, not sure if in Win8 or old Win7.

Maybe is something like 2013 -> 2014 -> WD Edition -> 2015 everytime uninstalled and replaced with fresh version then 2017 -> NG

I know also this 8.1 is a bit messed up, too many hardware changes.... however I have dual boot W10 and W8.1, where W10 is for Games, so I spend limited time in this 8.1 and too lazy for wipeout 8.1 and get another W10 for everything except Games.

However I waiting for get the session with developer, they contact me via email and we arrange for show with a remote session this strange issues.

I think maybe is a Side Issues from Comodo Security Suite, because if I check in Acronis, he try to connecting to Acronis Services. And from Comodo I can watch Acronis attempt to connecting to 239.255.255.250:1900 via UDP, maybe everytime he failed for strange issue Acronis generate a Ghost Drive.

Fabio, thank you for the update, hope that your session with the developer will show the reason for the ghost drives showing.

I am using Comodo Internet Security (version 8) on my system with ATIH 2017 New Generation with Acronis Protection active without seeing any similar issues.  I noticed that Comodo have released version 10 which I have on a different system so I could try NG on that one to see if it makes any difference?

I have Comodo 10.

Some new infos.

The real guilty of this strange issues is not Acronis Active Protection Service, I have enabled it without issues and Acronis tell me Protection are active, no more attempt to connecting to service. But is TrueImageMonitor.exe give me the issue.

Infact if I enabled the Acronis True Image 2017 Shield in TaskBar aka C:\Program Files (x86)\Acronis\TrueImageHome\TrueImageMonitor.exe I get the issue. By default this .exe autostart via Registry->Run. For now I have simple disabled it again in TaskManager.

I have try also different config, disabled Service, Acronis attempt to connecting to service and enabled only monitor.exe, issue again.

Both of him enabled, issue.

Only Service, no issue.

I have also a config file for TIMonitor.exe:

xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes"?
config
  logging
    channel id="arw-client-rest" level="info" enabled="true" type="logscope" maxfiles="30" compress="old" oneday="true"/
    channel id="ti-rpc-client"   level="info" enabled="true" type="logscope" maxfiles="30" compress="old" oneday="true"/

    channel id="ti_monitor" level="info" type="logscope" maxfiles="10" compress="old" oneday="true" />  <!--max 10 files, ?MB--
  /logging
/config

Fabio, I have upgraded my CIS from version 8 to 10 and still do not see any ghost drives etc on my Windows 10 64-bit system when having all the Acronis Services & Processes active for ATIH 2017 New Generation, including the new protection services.

Fixed with Developer TeamViewer Session. About 2h of Session and lucky Windows allowed to have drives from A: to Z: because if is from AA: to ZZ:, voila 21*21 Ghost Drives...... LooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooL :D But they collecting infos and give me the fix.

Shoty Story, Windows 8 -> 8.1 make a mess with upgrading, I have get some errors in registry, change my windows from english to italian, missed some dirs like nethood etcetc then permission for my c:\users\name get wrong.

So, TI try to create the Acronis Drive under Network Folder, but failed, the retry and spam the ghost drives. Now I have only a Acronis Drive (M:) after fix permission and registry.

The not forget I get 2 unrecognized users in permission, the first Win8 user and Win8.1 user migrated, then also not reinstalled when I change my pc, just mess hardware info, is true, to lazy to reinstall, because I spend much time in W10 for Games, less time in this old W8.1, but for sure prob is time to eradicate this Kaos 8.1.

However thx to Microsoft with wrong upgrading from 8 to 8.1 have help to create the issues. And I was scared to upgrading 8.1 -> 10, because from kaos 8.1 I get anarchy 10 Edition :D

Fabio, thank you very much for providing the feedback, it makes sense that it was Acronis Drive which has created the ghost drives in the network folder - have seen some other reports about issues being caused by Acronis Drive too for those who are using Mobile Backup in the latest build versions.  Interesting that your Acronis Drive is assigned to M: as for another user that overwrote his existing mapped network drive with the same letter!

About the M: This is the first ghost drive I have get spawned with the issue, then get I: J: K: N: etcetc

Prob because I: was my External WD MyBook, J: another Ext Hard Disk and K: Usb Pen Drive. So Windows remember they also if not plugged and get the first free letter, M: in my case.

The Fun thing I have realized not need really a Mobile Backup, because Android TI APP can't backup everything like a OS Drive PC and damn if I want get a perfect 1:1 copy of my Android.
