How to clean up long file names

I run an incremental backup that started out named "Backup2". It is set to create a full backup after every 4 incremental backups. This backup is made to an external USB drive.

I read in the forum that the long file names I'm seeing are caused when a backup fails. See attached screen capture that illustrates how long the file names are getting. I can verify that the files are being backed up fine, but I'd like to rename and shorten them without Acronis True Image Home 2009 losing track. What's the best way to accomplish that without messing up the backups or creating

Your attachment implies that your storage drive is formatted as a FAT32 file system which prevents each of your backups from being one large file.Your might want to consider changing the file type to NTFS.

Most of the forum regular forum contributors refrain from creating multi incrementals. Think of the entire backup set of being one big chain. If any of the links (individual incrementals) become corrupt, then the backup is only usable from the first full backup up to the file which is corrupt. If any of the older incrementals get corrupt, then the newer incrementals are NOT restorable. As to how many incrementals is too many is impossible to predict. You would be safer to create more frequent full backup sets so you have different sets to choose from should you have a need.

If you want clearer and a more refined organization, and better control over how many backup sets retained, consider adding the TrueImage helper program Chain2Gen (C2G) written by forum contributor MVP Oracledba.

TrueImage runs the tasks which does the scheduling and runs the backup tasks, whereas, C2G provides the controls on when the full backup should be created. or how many to be retained. C2G offers many choices.

With regard to FAT32, that is the default for the drive when purchased, and I have not changed it. One of the reasons for not changing it was being able to access this removable drive from Linux machines when necessary. I realize that there are some utilities to add NTFS to Linux, but I haven't experimented with them.

With regard to the incremental backups, that is the option that is selected as "Recommended" in Acronis when I am choosing backup types. It made sense to me at the time, although full backups make sense in general, I'm concerned about how many regular full backups I can do given the limited space on the drive--it's two times the size of my internal, and the internal is only about 33% full--which means I can theoretically get about six if there's nothing else on the drive. So I've been doing incremental as it is the "Recommended" setting and occasionally manually full backups.

I should say that one of the issues that has been increasingly apparent is that I need versioning. Which I'm realizing I don't seem to be getting very well. This is partially solved by using an competing online service to supplement my Acronis True Image backups. I'm currently experimenting with Acronis Online, but other than the large storage space my experience is that it won't be replacing my current online solution. I may be trying to get in touch with the sales team to get more info and a bit more convincing.
