True Image 2014, "an error occurred while opening the backup archive"

Thread needs solution

From Acronis True image 2014, running on Win7 64 bit prof, I click on the backup and recovery tab.  I then click on the recover icon.  First it will say no backups found on this computer, I then browse to my NAS drive.
All of my backup files are now listed, many TIB files.

I've tried double clicking on files inside acronis trueimage, don't see a response.  I've tried right clicking on files, no response.  If I highlight a file, then click on add to backup list, I then get an error "Failed to add the backup to the backup list.  The backup may be locked or corrupted.  Also make sure the folder contanins the last volume of the backup, and does not contain a renamed copy of the same backup."

I have three choices, more details with a huge long numbered event code, a button for the knowledge base, and last, ignore.

I've tired highlighting multiple files, starting with the "full" backup to multiple incremental files, same error.  

I was able to restore data from one drive earlier, and once recovered, I deleted what I think you call the backup block data.  

In windoze explorer, double clicking on the "full" backup, a detail list of the files come up, I'm asked "please locate the last volume of the backup," A window appears, showing the name of the backup file, in this case, "My_partitions_full_b1_s1_v1.tib."  No files or ions appear in the window.  I clicked on the highest number, an error comes up, "an error occurred while opening the backup archive.  Cannot continue the operation because the backup is corrupted or it is being used by another process, or you do not have enough permissions to perform the operation."

During the actual backup process, I would get an error once in a while, saying the drive was full, after deleting some photos or other documents, the next backup would complete without errors.

I don't recall a setting in Acronis true image where older files would be deleted automatically, nor do I remember anything in the manual as to "which" files could be deleted to create more space.

Of the 4TB of backup data I have, I can't believe that all of it is corrupt.  I don't know where to go from here, I left Symantec Backup because of poor customer support, I hope customer support with Acronis is better.

Jim, what are you trying to recover and how are you trying to do this?

Some of the errors that you are seeing would suggest that you are recovering from within the Windows ATIH 2014 GUI application, and that you may have manually deleted some of your older backup files rather than allowing Acronis to handle this via the automatic cleanup rules for the task that creates these files.

I would recommend doing a Validation for each backup task that is giving any error messages - this will attempt to locate each file which has been recorded as part of the backup task in the Acronis Database - if files are deleted or missing, then take the Ignore option each time an error is given, this will help reconcile the Database to the true status of available files.

There is a known issue with locating the last volume of a backup which can be resolved by following the advice given in post: https://forum.acronis.com/forum/117232#comment-359062 to clear out some stale database cache files.

If you are attempting to do a disk recovery, especially one involving your Windows OS, then it is highly recommended to only do this when using the Acronis bootable Rescue Media, and not start this from within Windows.  The Rescue Media does not refer to or use the Acronis Database, but relies solely on being pointed to the particular backup version chain that you want to recover from - you should select the latest backup file in the chain, i.e. the most recent incremental or differential backup file.

I will look into the validation tool, have never used it.  Spending many hours trying to recover files/folders, I found what works best is to go into windows explorer and simply double-click on the oldest archive, hopefully version 1 or earlier.  If I'm lucky, a window pops up showing an icon of a drive and the name of the archive.  Clicking on the icon, I see icons of c:, FAT32 drive, and another data drive.  The archive is more than six months old, but I'd rather recover six month old data than none.  So far that has worked.

I tried recovering newer data, date-marked 2017, and it would then ask for the last volume, I'd locate it, and usually have bad results.  I am using a WD NAS 6TB RAID as my backup destination.  It's gotten full at times and I'd get a message that my backup failed, can't remember the exact message.  I may have deleted some old files, not knowing what to delete, done in windows.

This brings up a question, when the destination is full, can Acronis automatically start deleting the oldest backups?  I didn't notice that in the settings, as it's been a couple years since I installed the program.  I suspect the problem I'm having is a cockpit problem, I probably deleted something I shouldn't have.

What doesn't work well, is bringing up the Acronis program, clicking on recover, browsing to the backup destination, and clicking on files to be added to the backup list.

I hate to say, it's nice to see that a backup was successful, but you don't know that until you try to restore from it.

I've pretty-much rebuilt my system, I will blow away the backups and re-configure Acronis to do backups again.

Jim, your ATIH 2014 application has the ability to perform automatic cleanup based on various rules that you can configure for each backup task.

See the ATIH 2014 User Guide: Backup schemes where you will see a screen graphic showing the cleanup options.

My own preference is to use the option to Store no more than X recent version chains where you set the size of the version chain in the settings shown above this setting, i.e. Create a full version after Y incremental versions, so if Y = 5 (as shown) then if you Store no more than X = 2 recent version chains, your storage requirement to hold these version chains will equal 2 x Full backup files plus 10 Incremental backup files plus 1 further Full backup file.

The reason for the further Full backup file is that Acronis will not cleanup the oldest version chain until after that new Full backup for the next new version chain has been created successfully.

Using these automatic cleanup rules will make managing your backup storage much easier without requiring you to manually remove old files or deciding which old backup files can safely be deleted etc.  Using automatic cleanup also correctly manages / maintains the Acronis Database information to avoid getting error messages for missing version files.
