Ummm, so where are you getting this error and what have you done up to this point that results in the error? Some system information, details would be helpful too. To get forum user, volunteer help, the more information you can provide, the better.

Alternatively, you can open a technical support case, directly with Acronis. https://www.acronis.com/en-us/support/contact-us.html

Kyle,

Are you trying to recover your Windows drive while booted into Windows?  The error you quote indicates this is the case.  Recovery of a Windows System disk should only be done when the machine is booted into Acronis Rescue Media which you create on either CD/DVD or USB flash drive media.

The error you see is telling you that your machine cannot start the recovery media agent from within the Windows installed True Image application.   Your only solution is to boot to Recovery Media to perform the recovery operation.

I should have been clearer on what is going on..  I'm running W7, have been using Acronis 2013 since 2013 with no problems until about a month ago.  I thought maybe one of the Windows updates might have affected the 2013 application, so I bought and installed Acronis True Image 2017. Still the same problem. The application I'm trying to run is "Clone Disc"  Until I had the problem during the disc cloning process I've done it many times with no problem.  I have two mobile racks on my computer and keep an extra HHD/SSD for a backup on my secondary drive "D".. Using a Recovery Media does not solve the problem on my computer.  Clone disc runs fine until after I've selected the source and destination disc. When it tries to run the balance of the application I first get the message "Failed to activate bootable agent", and then "Target file not defined"....Details show "http://kb.acronis.com/errorcode/, event code 0x005F0002. I've Goggled this code many times and no ones been able to have any answer that helps.

I appreciate your efforts to help solve my problem.

Kyle

When you choose Clone Disc and then select to Clone your Windows System disk the applicaiton cannot perform this operation while the System disk is booted.  Therefore, the computer must shutdown the current session and reboot into a Linux based environment to perform the operation.  This is where you are having failure.  The error you are getting is indicating that is the case.

The Recovery Media is essentially the same as this process except it allows the user to boot directly to the Linux environment and then setup and run the Clone procedure.  Please review the link below on the does and dont's of Cloning a Windows System disk.

I've been running Acronis 2013 for years and never had this problem. It always has shutdown and loaded the linux based enviornment to finish the process. Is this something a computer "guru" could solve with a home visit to my computer or would I be wasting $$$$?

Thanks for your input......

A compouter GURU as you put it will not be able to help you with this so yes, you would be wasting your money.

The clone disk option works you just have to learn how to boot your computer from the recovery media.  You can achieve the same result by creating a full system disk backup image and then restoring that image to another drive however, even that would require your computer to reboot into the Linux environment so the bottom line is you need to figure out how to use the recovery media.

This situation is simple, it is not possible to perform low level disk operation such as True Image or any other backup application does such as Clone while the disk in question is booted.  This must always be done from an "off-line" disk.  That requires that the computer is booted into another environment.  A Linux environment is used by default with the 2017 product.  There is an option to use a WinPE environment but requires more steps by the user to create.

So the choice is yours.

My 2013 True Image use to shut-off automatically, with permission, during the clone disc process and reboot to the Linux environment  to do the copy function. YOu could then see the process (timer going) and the option to shut down or remain on after the job was done. The switch between my OS and Linus was automatic.

Just don't know why Acronis makes it harder to use now than before.

Do you know of any other programs that can do "Copy Disc" function without all the hassel?

ONe of the other comments says encription files wou't work on a "Copy disc" function. Anyway I could find these files and get them off my computer?

I'm averse to messing with my BIOS to get the zip drive to start first and then putting it back to my C drive. When I get into the"computer language" of my computer I'm not always sure what to do.

Thanks for your help, it's really appreciated.

+1 on what Enchantech recommends.

Use the bootable media if you want to clone. Use the bootable media if you want to recover a disk image.

+2 on what Enchantech recommends.

While I have done cloning from within Windows (definitely with 8.1 not sure if done so with 10) using ATI 2016 and possibly (beta) 2017, I only did so for an old system where if things went wrong it did not matter. I was migrating the OS from IDE drive to SATA. It worked without problem ... but I was lucky.

Edit: One complication is that the process may not work if you have fast-boot activated. Not sure but I know it can mess up other things.

Short of learning to boot your machine from the Recovery Media to run this task all I can suggest is that you uninstall the 2017 product, run the cleanup tool found here: http://kb.acronis.com/content/48668, and then reinstall the 2013 product.

Be advised that performing a clone as you have done in the past can and often does result in a corrupted Maser Boot Record and can render both source and target disk unbootable.  Therfore it is strongly advised by all MVP's here that a full disk backup be performed prior to the clone operation so that if need be that image can be restored to disk.  Again, that restore should be done using the Recovery Media.
