new problem with cloning

Thread needs solution

hi there

i have both this win xp and the windows 7 version of acronis and i have never had a problem

i use this to clone my hard drive so i can just replace the bad hd with a new back up

i clone via a sata power cord and a converter that goes into the usb from the data cable

the usb hard drive is in the my computer with my c drive when i connected my usb this time

ran acronis set to clone as always

when the computer reboot the check disk with xxxxxxx

and the check other disk xxxxxx

100 pecent

then the checking partions thing just sits for a few secs the the reboot back to windows

no xxxxxxx

so i reformat the usb hd fast style worked so i know its there as far as windows is concered

and i copied an icon from desk top there but now i have no back up so that was a big mistake

since that was my clone

now this is a must solve problem due tro whatever problem achronis is creating

i attempted to use partitiion mgr free but it just freezes the computer so whetever the issue is it

involeves the usb volume somehow is somewthing mysterious i have built this cmoputer from

scratch i know everything about this process from years of experiennce but i am lost and i need

help!!!!

thanks in advance

Richard, welcome to these user forums.

Please see topic: [IMPORTANT] CLONING - How NOT to do this!!! - this was written in response to the many problems users have found in using cloning.

Some questions that may help us to help you more:

What actual versions of Acronis True Image are you using?  This forum is for versions which are from 2014 and earlier, all of which are unsupported by Acronis directly unless using their Pay Per Incident service.

What is the status of your computer where you were attempting the clone?
Is this computer still able to boot successfully to Windows?
Which version of Windows OS is installed?

Personally, I would advise against attempting to clone without having made a full disk & partitions backup to another drive first.  I rarely use cloning as Backup and Recovery can do the same as cloning and is a whole lot safer.

Also, as per the above cloning topic, this should only be done when using the Acronis bootable Rescue Media to avoid problems that come from starting this from the Windows Acronis application.

You would be recommended to run CHKDSK /F against all the disk drives involved here, and if you are seeing any indication of any bad sectors, to run CHKDSK /R to try to identify and reallocate those bad sectors if possible.  Cloning can fail if bad sectors are encountered.

hi there

thanks for the reply!!!

thanks for the sticky

i am only intersted in cloning my discs

i would not have any product if it did not do cloning

so please dont discuss backups with me as its wasted effort typing to me since i bought this product for 1 purpose. i wont defend my choice to buy this to avoid weeks and weeks of effort to get my hd back to this condition after years and years and years of acummulation it does the job properly for so many years has saved me so many times because i do clone faithfully every 3 months that i bought the win 7 version when i got a new computer

in answer to your querys

1 - well i have version 9  2,245 i am using win xp pro

2- i dont know what you are trying to say about the status of my computer question can you be clearer? acronis caused a reboot to begin the procss after the checks of drives were successful the partion check before the copying failed and it rebooted again to my desktop

3  - the computer does boot and run normally i am using it now

4 - xp pro

the CHKDSK /R is a great recommendation those old dos commands are so useful i forget its even possible to have a powerful; tool like that !!!

ok i will run that now and let you know how it goes i will invstgate other repain investigat resourses i might have too

i will post either way

thanks so much!!!

Richard, thanks for the further information.

ATI 9.0 is one of the oldest versions of the product (from 2006) and if the 2245 numbers you gave are the build of this product, then it is not even the final/latest build that was produced which was #3854. It also only supports up to your Windows XP SP2 per the User Guide.

I get that you are only interested in using Cloning but you also need to be aware of the limitations of that tool.  The KB document referenced in the sticky I directed you to look at:

KB 1540: Difference between Backup and Disk Clone speaks to some of those limitations.

My question about the status of your computer was purely to ask if it was still working OK, which you have answered when you say it is and you are using it, which is great to hear!  Unfortunately we do get users who use cloning and end up with nothing that works because both drives are hosed in the process, where the only recourse is to do a clean install of Windows and everything else.  Though you may not be interested in doing a backup, it can save you hours, days or weeks of time in having to rebuild your computer should a significant issue arise, such as a dangerous power surge that fries your hardware.

I hope that the CHKDSK helps in this situation and wish you all the best in getting the clone done.

hi i have determined the situation

checkdisk worked fine i also used the one in windows

then i ran hd partion free and the computer did not freeze so i dismounted the drive and replaced it with a new partition

then i tried to run acronis it worked but found a bad sector less than 10 secs into it

so my drive has reach the end of its life span

its so strange to me that i can use it ll my previous experinces with hd is dead like a brick or ok but now i know how to solve this next time if there is one

i wish i could repair the drive some how its only 75 gb compared to the master is 160 i was going to ask if that could be the problem next but i always pick proportional in the program it never caused an issue

thanks for the great input i know my next step

i will say the program has done exactly what it is advertised to do from the first use -very user intuition friendly and self explainitory

good luck
