tib vs pbd
i own ati 2017 but im experimenting with a different program. they use pbd files.
i created a full backup with acronis it was 34gb. then i created a full backup with the other program soon after and it was 25gb! somethings not right with one of these programs. can anyone explain this?
thank you

nothing was excluded from either backup as far as i know. the exclusion list was unchecked in ati and empty in the other program.
in any case i decided to stick with ati. i restored from it once a few years back and it worked well. it wasnt so user friendly them but sems to have significantly improved.
i think ill stick with it.
i am quite curious though
thanks

feivel, I would recommend enabling the default exclusions in Acronis, in particular to exclude the system pagefile.sys, hiberfil.sys and swapfile.sys which can add significantly to the backup size for no good reason or value - these files get recreated when booting into Windows. Acronis also excludes any existing .TIB image files by default.
With regards to restoring / recovery, please create and test the Acronis Rescue Media and confirm that you are able to boot from this successfully and can see your internal and external drives from this.

thanks steve. i was afraid if those files were not included then the newly created files would be empty and thus not be in sync with the rest of the system. ( i have no actual idea what those files are, only what i imagine them to be). but to confirm, that's not a problem?
2. actually i already made a rescue usb. i thought about testing it. but was afraid i would end up actually performing a restore! would i see a "final screen" button like "Restore Now" or something?
kind of like amazons orange bar: "place your order"?
i really do appreciate your expert help very much. thank you

forgot: i turned off all exclusions on my current running backup (differential) when i first set it up. can i edit it and add those exclusions now?
or should i create a new scheme?
im not concerned about space so much right now. i just want to be sure editing and adding those exclusions now won't mess anything up.
thanks

The system files can be safely excluded from your backups, Windows will automatically recreate them on boot, so there is no problem here.
With your rescue USB stick, the key is to test that you can get to the main Acronis application panel, and when there, can see the options to allow you to either make an offline backup of your disks, partitions or files & folders - this will show that your drives can be found correctly.
On the Recovery side, then you can simulate how a recovery might go but without actually committing to do the final recovery action.
If it helps, see the document ATIH 2017 Disk Restore.PDF that I created a little while ago to show how to do such a recovery, which shows the steps needed to be performed.

one more thing im not clear on.
the following is a quote of a previous post of mine on this thread:

I would say that it would probably be best to create a new backup task with the desired correct settings for exclusions etc, that way you are not trying to identify what has changed in the new backup files being created just because you have now applied the exclusions.

In reply to I would say that it would… by truwrikodrorow…

Definitely create a new backup task; changing the configuration after a backup task has be executed can, or at least has in the past, produced unexpected and sometimes undesirable outcomes.
