Evaluation version for Oracle VM

Thread needs solution

Hello,

I'm trying to evaluate Acronis Backup Advanced for Oracle VM. The following product page allowed me to request trial version of it:
http://www.acronis.com/en-us/enterprise/download/backup/oracle/

What I've downloaded from there was: "AcronisBackupAdvanced_11.5N_trial_en-US.exe" which I've installed on Windows 2012 without problems. However, I can't find specific information how to integrate this with Oracle VM. Only some, very terse, information that I need agents inside guest domains. I have few questions:
- What component should I install on Oracle VM Servers (i.e. dom0) - if any
- What component should I install on Oracle VM Manager - if any
- Is there specific documentation for this version? Can you help with link? I found only general version and the one for VMware.

Actually, I'm not even able to install linux agents inside my guests because there is no linux client included in trial version. I have read that I need to download them separately - but this led me to the page where I need product serial to register. Which I obviously do not have as I'm only evaluating. I need to check if this product works with Oracle Linux 6.x

Thanks,
Michal

Hi Michal,

The Acronis Backup Advanced for Oracle VM and Acronis Backup Advanced for RHEV/KVM products provide agent-based solution for Oracle VM and RHEV/KVM environments accordingly. A single license of these products allow installation of unlimited number of backup agents onto VMs on corresponding virtualization platform. You should only install Acronis Backup Agent inside the VMs running on Oracle VM (no need to install anything into Oracle VM manager or Oracle VM servers, i.e. dom0) and register these Agents in Acronis Management Server which you have installed already.

Note that you can install both Windows and Linux backup agents remotely from the Acronis Management Server. To install Linux agents you should unpack the below components first and place them into some folder on Acronis Management Server:

http://dl2.acronis.com/s/AcronisBackupAdvancedLinux_11.5N_43759_en-US.t…

http://dl2.acronis.com/s/AcronisBackupAdvancedLinux64_11.5N_43759_en-US…

See http://www.acronis.com/en-us/support/documentation/AcronisBackup_11.5/i… for further instructions.

I've also reported the fact that Linux agents are unavailable for trial download and confirmed that it's a bug on our website - we will fix it asap.

P.S. as a workaround one can download the trial of Acronis Backup Advanced Server for Linux in order to get the required Linux agents (they can be used with any other Acronis Backup Advanced product edition) http://www.acronis.com/en-us/enterprise/download/backup/advanced-linux-…

Thank you.

Acronis Virtualization Program Manager

Dear Vasily,

as you mentioned the Acronis Management Server, is there a package for Linux Servers? And if so, what's the name of this product? I can't find any Product named "Acronis Management Server" - the only product related to a management server I've found is named "Acronis Backup & Recovery 11.5".

My objective is to install a management server and backup oracle VM guests.

Edit-1: Ok, I think I got it. The Management Console is inside the package named "...MConsole". Is this the right package?

Best R.,
Nico

Hi Nico,

Acronis Management Server (AMS) and Management Console (MC) are component of Acronis Backup 11.5 Advanced package. They are installed by default when you run Acronis Backup setup and currently support installation onto Windows only. In the next version (12) we are adding installation onto Linux support into AMS component (it will be delivered in 2 packages). Right now for your scenario you need to install Acronis Backup 11.5 Advanced (you can choose default components to be installed) onto some Windows machine (can be a VM) and you will get AMS + MC components - then just deploy the required backup agents remotely from MC connected to AMS (physical machines management->install agents).

Thank you.

Acronis Virtualization Program Manager

Dear Vasily,

Thanks for your quick reply. I have successfully set up the components and everything is running smoothly. Currently I am looking for the supported backup methods of Acronis Backup Advanced 11.5 for Oracle VM. My objective is to backup and restore virtual machines. My current understanding of Acronis Backup Advanced is, that it does not support Backup of virtual machines on hypervisor level in Oracle VM as described in [1]. So, if we want to use Oracle VM, a backup and restore of virtual machines is not possible with Acronis Backup Advanced.

Is this right or did I miss something?

Thank you.

Best R.,
Nico

Hi Nico,

Your understanding is close to correct. That's what I meant under "agent-based solution" in my first reply to Michal above. Note that backup and restore of virtual machines running on Oracle VM is only possible via installation of Acronis backup agent inside these VMs. So in total: yes, backup at hypervisor level is not possible, backup at machine level (agent-based) is possible.

Thank you.

Acronis Virtualization Program Manager

Dear Vasily,

thank you for your quick Reply. Do you have a solution for restoring these backups at machine level in Virtual Machines? Let me explain this question: I back up (full or incremental backup) an agent installed guest VM at an Oracle VM host. After hours I want to restore the saved back up as a new VM. Is this possible or do you have other solutions for this use case?

Thank you.

Best,
Nico

Hi Nico,

The proper way here is to create a new VM with empty disks, then boot it from Acronis Backup bootable media, which can be created via Acronis Bootable Media Builder or also available as .iso from downloads section from your account on our web site. After that run Recovery wizard, browse the backup you created before (on network share or on managed/unmanaged vault), and then run the recovery.

Thank you.
