2010 tib file compatibility with 2011

Thread needs solution

Are 2011 backups backward compatible with 2010? If an incremental is added to a 2011 backup in 2010 will it show up in 2011? Reason I ask is that apparently 2011 doesn't do incremental backups all the time. Thanks

I asked a similar question when 2010 came out and here is Acronis's reply:

Actually, our general policy regarding supported versions is one version back compatibility. This means that current product version will work with backups created with one-generation-older version.

E.g. Acronis True Image Home 2009 will work with backups created by Acronis True Image 11 Home. Restoring backups created by older versions (Acronis True Image 10.0 Home and older) is also possible, but error-free data recovery is not guaranteed

Having provided this answer I believe that Acronis told me in a different post that I can't find that when a new version comes out you really need to start with a new full image backup prior to doing incremental backups. I believe that what Acronis is saying is that they can restore a 2010 image however the assumption is that it's only a 2010 backup.

Agreed, the best would be to start a new backup scheme purely in 2011 (full + x incrementals / differentials). While Acronis say they guarantee backwards compatibility of N-1, sometimes there are problems between different builds of the same version... sorry, don't have the topic numbers on hand.
Bottom line, start afresh.

Thanks All. I kind of figured that but was hoping i'd be wrong. Given the problems with this version I am extremely disappointed.

OK, as I can understand, you'll add an incremental backup in 2011 to a full-backup created with ATIH2010.
I think, it's a good date to change to the new Acronis-philosophy, which comes with ATIH2011. You have to use a user-defined backup-scheme and change the method to incremental.
If you want to use your old backup, simply add your backup to the "My backups" list on the main window. After this, choose "action" and in the context-menu choose "renew backup-settings" (or similar. I've the german trial running) and then do as desribed above.

Generally you can rely on backwards compatibility but not forwards compatibility. ATI x will read and handle ATI x-1 files but going the other way, which it seems you want to do (useing ATI2010 on a ATI2011 backup, can be problematic and not to be encouraged.

Michael- I've done that but it refuses to do anything but a Full to any Backup that's been added manually to the list.
Scott- Thanks, I think they have more problems than compatability.

Hey Norman, regarding to Scotts posting, it seems that I understand your first posting wrong.
What's your goal?
You want to create an incremental backup with ATIH2010 to a full backup which was created with ATI2011.
Scott is right with his conclusion to forward-compatibility. Because in your case ATIH2010 might be able to handle ATIH2011-backups.

The other way - that's what I thought first - is possible, of course (N-1).

Right, I was asking if an incremental to a 2011 backup created in 2010 would work because 2011 won't do an incremental to any backup(ie; a 2010 or 2011) added manually to the list.
