Acronis True Image 2018 - Won't Install, Won't Uninstall, Won't start
I tried to install TI2018 and it hung at about 95%, in the end I had to kill it off.
I re-ran the installer and the only option is to uninstall so tried, that. Setup hangs at launch, so can't uninstall.
I tried running TI control panel, hangs at Applying user settings... (program is not responding)
Shutdown PC (which took ages)
Start up PC
Tried to open TI, hangs at Applying user settings...
Tried to uninstall (via control panel) -- hangs before any UI is displayed.
So, stuck atm completely.

Austin, if you are comfortable with it, you might go to the Services and stop all the Acronis services before trying to uninstall and/or run the cleanup tool. Might be easier that way.

Acronis support used the cleanup tool to uninstall.
I reinstalled after a reboot and it got stuck again at 95% but I noticed db_scan.exe in the process list (an Acronis process) was performing I/O but then stopped. About 30 minutes later it eventually finishes, and we get to Launch Application.
On clicking Launch Application it hangs at "Applying user settings..."
It takes 20 minutes to launch the application. I managed to configure a backup, and that backup ran and completed surprisingly quickly (100GB over the network). But every time I open Acronis it sticks at "Applying user settings..." for 20 minutes.
This is a shame because I am looking for new backup software as Crashplan has dropped out of the consumer market, so I need a new backup solution. I really want it to be TrueImage because I have used it in the past very successfully.
So I really need to solve this 20-minute delay in loading. I suspect it's related to the issue the installer was having.

Austin, you should not be seeing 20 minute delays in just launching the Acronis application, nor during the install process etc.
This suggests that Acronis is conflicting with something else that you have installed on your computer.
If you still have an open Support Case with Acronis then I would recommend continuing to work with them to try to identify why you are seeing such delays and what needs to be done to resolve them.

I do have a case open and they are investigating.
I did notice d3d9.dll was 0 bytes in the trueimage directory, not sure if that's relevant or not, but that seemed a bit odd. It does seem the hang happen in the installer, uninstaller and client just when you would expect the user interface to appear.
It's interesting also that the installer runs fine, when acronis is not installed, but once acronis is installed, the installer hangs too (I expect if I wait long enough it will eventually appear).
A support engineer is gathering logs off my PC atm, as it has had him stumped for the last 45 mins.

Please let us know how this works out as it is certainly a puzzling problem?

This reminds me that when I did an update to a new release of ATI2017 on my Windows 7 PC earlier this year, it took over 10 minutes to come up. I think it was the process of looking for backups. The problem did not last long and I cannot recall what (if anything) I did to fix it. I realize that's no help, but an acknowledgement that a similar thing has been seen.

Looks like the issue with opening Acronis was down to a bad hard disk I had plugged into a Docking Station (I didn't know it was bad).
I tried to open Try & Decide and that was also taking ages, and eventually complained about reading sector 0 of disk 5 (An empty removable drive according to Disk Management).
So I opened Disk Management and I noticed it took ages to connect to Virtual Disk Manager, much longer than usual and it eventually complained about disk 4 (not 5) was showing as a 1GB drive and uninitialized. That is an old IDE disk that I had plugged into the docking station (which used to work).
Anyway, I removed the HD from the docking station and now Acronis opens in about 10 seconds. Disk Management also opens much quicker. Oddly, Disk Management still sees the 1GB drive even though I have removed it!
Plugged it back in, and Acronis still opens in 10 seconds, as does Disk Management. So whatever what upset by this dodgy disk (my guess, Virtual Disk Manager) is no longer upset at least, probably not until reboot.
The obv answer is, throw the disk away! Where is my sledgehammer!

Austin, thank you for the feedback, disk problems can cause some strange symptoms and once a disk starts giving problems with reading sectors it is time to consider whether it has a future!

Austin,
I appreciate your thorough posting of this issue in the forum. I had the exact same problem come up recently with ATI 2018. I also had the problem with Disk Management that you experienced. After reading this posting I disconnected all the external drives, and the uninstall/re-install functions performed perfectly. I then re-connected an external drive after verifying with the Windows error-checking utility that it was error free. Using the error-free external drive as my backup has both ATI 2018 and Disk Management working like their old selves again. Thank you for your help in resolving this extremely puzzling issue.
Ron
