Acronis True Image 2018 Active Protection blocking Acronis DriveMonitor

Thread needs solution

Active Protection is blocking Acronis DriveMonitor. The message window says:

"MBR was protected

An attempt by process c:\Program Files(x86)\Acronis\DriveMonitor\adm.exe to modify MBR of your disc was successfully blocked"

DriveMonitor keeps trying to do whatever it is trying to do, and Active Protection keeps blocking it, so I am having to repeatedly close multiple warning windows. As a result I have now had to turn Active Protection off.

I have added adm.exe to the permissions list as Trusted, and I have added the DriveMonitor folder to the Ransomware protection exclusions list.

What else do I need to do to stop Active Protection from blocking DriveMonitor?

Paul, unfortunately, Acronis Drive Monitor is an obsolete product by definition and is unsupported for use on most modern Windows OS versions such as 8 and upwards.

See KB 58078: Acronis Drive Monitor which states the following:

Supported Operating Systems

Acronis has discontinued developing Acronis Drive Monitor, therefore new operating systems like Windows 8/8.1, Windows 10, Windows Server 2012/2012R2 and others are not supported.

  • Windows XP SP2+ x32 and x64 Editions
  • Windows Vista all SP x32 and x64 Editions
  • Windows 7 (all editions)
  • Windows 2003 SP 2+ x32 (including x64 editions)
  • Windows Server 2008 all SP x32 (including x64 editions)

Thank you for letting me know the situation. I am using Windows 7, but I see that is included in the list. I will have to consider whether I still need it.

I would still like to know how to stop Active Protection from blocking any other programs that it might take a dislike to in the future.

Paul, please see the following KB documents that may help you here:

59356: Acronis True Image 2017: troubleshooting Acronis Active Protection and

60193: Acronis True Image 2018: Active Protection blocks legitimate applications

The second document is written for the new ATIH 2018 implementation of AAP but may offer some suggestions for you.

Thank you again. I have already followed these instructions with adm.exe and it is still being blocked. Perhaps this is a deliberate decision by Acronis to discourage the use of one of its no-longer-supported programs. I guess I will have to decide between DriveMonitor (which I still find useful) and Active Protection.

Paul, another option is to look at alternatives to Drive Monitor

Thanks Steve, there are some interesting alternatives there. I may try one or two to see what they offer. For now I have turned off DriveMonitor's background monitoring, which has stopped the blocking messages, so at least I can run Active Protection again. Thanks again for your help.
