[REPRODUCIBLE ISSUE] Active Protection will spawn a "MBR was protected" after updating Intel RST

Thread needs solution

Brief problem description:

Active Protection will cause a "MBR was protected" message after updating Intel RST 15.8.1.1007,

mbr_error.PNG

This also happends during installing the driver, while it seems the setup process will not be tampered. (intel RST Tool and driver will be updated effectively)

The message can be closed but will re-appear occasionally.

The message also lacks of sense, as no drive MBR scheme is used on affected computers, all use GPT.

Solution:

none so far

Workaround:

downgrade to Intel RST 15.7 (not recommendable imho)

Affected versions:

Intel RST 15.8.1.1007

Acronis True Image 2018 9207 (ATIH 2017 NG may be affected too)

Environment:

Windows 10 1703 15063.608 (Sept. CU)

tested on newer Intel Chipsets like Z270 (Asus) and Z170 (Asrock)

Hi Karl,

Did you just install the driver or did you install the complete IRST software package?

Ian, for for missing this bigt. It was the complete software package. Haven't tried driver only, as I had installed RST as software package previously and the may also have fixed code in the Intel RST application.

Karl,

The driver is fine it is the IRST software that AP has issue with.  For others reading this post if you have installed the Intel Management Engine (IME) component on your system and you upgrade to this driver AP will flag 2 processes, Intel Security Assistant and iaservhelper.exe which are part of IME.

The IRST software nor the IME are necessary for your system to function properly.  You can safely uninstall both and rid yourself of the warnings.

To be honest I rather have disabled AP for a while till this is adressed, not a recommendation for anyone though.
