PC Mover versus True Image

Thread needs solution

I'm a little confused.  I don't know what the software pc mover does that True Image doesn't already do.  I am interested in buying a new PC for my wife but moving all of the apps from her old computer into the new one.  In the past this has been a very difficult job.  Can PC Mover make this easier...and can I do this with True Image....easier?

Charles, I have no knowledge or experience of Laplink PC Mover other than what I read when doing a quick Google Search, i.e. that it claims to be able to move programs / applications to a new computer without the need to reinstall.

What isn't mentioned is that some applications are activated based on the hardware signature of the computer where they are installed, so moving these may result in failed activation or requiring a new software licence, i.e. Microsoft Office.

Acronis True Image cannot be used to migrate individual applications or programs to another computer as documented in KB 19296: Acronis products cannot be used to transfer applications to different system or upgrade OS but could be used to migrate a whole installed Windows system and installed applications to new hardware, however this is not a trivial operation.

Personally, if your new computer you are looking to buy will come with Windows 10 installed and configured for all the hardware components it provides, then I would look at exactly what applications / programs you would want to transfer to that new computer?

PC Mover is not a free application, and if you have the installation media for your key applications, it may be simpler to reinstall these on the new computer.

There are alternative products that claim to do the same as PC Mover, such as one from EaseUS Todo PCTrans Pro which is currently on offer (as per an email I received recently). Note: I have never used any of these products personally.

Thank you Steve.  Seems to be an age old challenge that doesn't have any easy solution.  Others have the same disdainful view of transfer software.  Hope you have a nice Christmas.
