How to uninstall Acronis 2016?

Thread needs solution

Hi,  I am trying to uninstall Acronis 2016.  I started the uninstall, then got interrupted.  When I went back to it, the Acronis name was missing from the Control Panel uninstall list.  Is there some other way to uninstall Acronis?  Thanks.

Hi Barbara,

Go to thie link and review.  Download the clean up utility which is linked therein and run it following the instructions of the link provided.

your kidding right? 2015 untility for 2016 removal and go to registry keys? I just cant believe the mess ATI has made of my system. ATI program file stuck, causing errors, can get it removed. Ive been working at it for 2 hours and in the meantime i dont have a backup of my data. I guess i could pay $20 for a problem ATI caused. i wish i would not have waisted the upgrade purchase to 2016.

thanks

The Acronis Cleanup Tool works fine for both the 2015 and 2016 versions along with others too, the list of versions is shown within the tool when you run it.

If you are uncomfortable with using the tool, then you can also use third-party uninstaller tools like Revo Uninstaller or IObit Uninstaller.  The key difference here though is that the Acronis Cleanup tool will work in situations where an Acronis product has been partially uninstalled, whereas the third-party tools normally depend on the programs being uninstalled to be still listed in the Control Panel Programs & Features list of installed programs.

gwhitty,

The tool is pretty straightforward and easy to run.  It's up to you if you want to fix the issue or not though.  I doubt ATIH is the culprit for making a mess of your system, but more of a side effect of underlying issues on the system that were already there.  Unfortunately, we have no insight into how your system is used on a daily basis, what apps are installed, what programs you run, what kind of system maintenance you peform, malware you've had (detected or not), upgrades of the OS and other apps, the health of your hard drives and other hardware, etc.  We can, however, try to help you resolve your existing ATIH issues as they stand currently, but it's entirely up to you if you want to move forward with the information provided or not.

This is an old thread but perhaps someone is able to give me advice on my troubles with removing ATI 2016.

I was content enough with the program but after Windows 10 update complained at me for the 13th time that it could not update my computer, I decided to temporarily remove ATI.  I used the usual method through Settings/Apps uninstall. Windows was not satisfied -- remove the program (windows couldn't do it for me so...) I used the Acronis Cleanup tool. Twice. Windows still not happy. I searched thru the computer for every instance of Acronis in all the directories from the root up to AppData, downloads etc. Deleted all the folders that seemed to pertain to the installation. Windows 10 update still not happy. I searched for all references to Acronis in the registry and (gulp) deleted all of them. There is nothing left on the computer that looks like Acronis.  Windows update still gives me the same message. What am I missing?

Paul, welcome to these User Forums.

Please see forum topic: [How to] uninstall a previous installation which may offer some further steps for you to try.

Note: Check also if you have more than one user account on your PC, if so, run the Cleanup Tool for each account.

Thanks for the suggestion. I followed that forum topic a few days ago but still no joy.  I only have one user account on the computer. I am at a loss to know what to do next apart from reset Windows then reinstall everything. Yikes, days of work.

Paul, try doing an in-place upgrade of Windows 10 to see if that resolves issues for you - this will not lose any of your data and is relatively quick to do.

See webpage: Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

Steve, thanks for the suggestion but Windows 10 Setup gives me the same message and tells me to manually uninstall ATI.  Of course, I cannot as it no longer exists on my computer. Yesterday I reinstalled ATI 2016 and activated the recovery module. Then deactivated the recovery module, uninstalled ATI and ran the cleanup utility. Still no luck.

Paul, what exactly is the error message that you are being given here?  The only reason why there should be an issue here is if there is either an active Acronis Service or Process in the system, or else if you have enabled either the Acronis Secure Zone (ASZ) or Acronis Startup Recovery Manager (ASRM) (gives a F11 prompt on boot).

See KB 56697: Acronis True Image 2016: Services and Processes to help with checking these.

The ASZ should show as a FAT32 partition at the end of your disk drive in Windows Disk Management if present, and ASRM will show the F11 prompt when doing a Restart of Windows.

If you have a copy of the Acronis Rescue media (on CD/DVD or USB stick) you can remove both ASZ & ASRM using the media when booted from it.

I am at a loss. There is no ASZ or ASRM on my computer; at least not that I am able to find.  Diskpart shows 3 partitions System, (the EFI partiton which I deleted then re-created, formated and rebuilt), Primary and Recovery. Pressing F11 when rebooting does nothing. There is no message regarding Acronis Startup Recovery.  Before uninstalling ATI, I used the ASZ app to look for a secure zone -- there was none.  I have disconnected all drives except the system drive, still the problem persists. None of the processes listed on the link (KB56697) is running on my system. None are included in the Services app as either running or not running. There is no mention of any of them on Msconfig. I have poked around in the Recovery partition. There is nothing there that looks like Acronis. WindowsRE folder has only 3 files including winre.wim but nothing that appears to belong to Acronis.

I have made a screenshot of the Update message regarding ATI.

Paul, very strange indeed.

The following is a list of places where Acronis installs to or stores data.

C:\ProgramData\Acronis
C:\Program Files (x86)\Acronis
C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Acronis
C:\Users\[name]\AppData\Local\Acronis
C:\Users\[name]\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\ProgramData\Acronis\
C:\Users\[name]\AppData\Roaming\Acronis

HKCU\Software\Acronis
HKLM\Software\Acronis

None of those entries exist on the computer. Still the update fails with the same message.

Sorry, Paul, I am stumped here as to what Windows is complaining about.  The only other suggestion is to check that there is absolutely nothing related to Acronis running in either the Windows Task Manager or as a Windows Service.

I finally found the problem; feeling a little sheepish.  Several months ago, Windows on my laptop crashed and I recovered the files to a recovery file on my desktop system hard drive -- within my user desktop folder. The recovery folder included a file labeled ntfs which included the root folders from the laptop including Program Files and Program Files (x86).  Deleting these folders allowed the update to progress.  Now, I have to wonder why the search app failed to find the recovered folders containing Acronis files, but that is a different problem.

Paul, thanks for the feedback and glad that you finally got to the bottom of this mystery!
