Recovery fails to recover the partition structure

Using build 10640, I have performed a backup of all of the partitions on my hard drive and validated the backup as per usual.

My system failed to load, so I booted from the bootable media that I had previously created from the 10640 ISO file,

and tried to recover from the latest backup.

The partitions seemed to be recovered ok , but when the progress information changed to 'recovering partition structure' it hung up, whereas it usually takes 10 seconds or a minute at most.

I waited for 15 minutes before powering the laptop off and powering it back on again, and it failed to boot with a blue screen (presumably output from the Acer BIOS) saying that my PC needs to be repaired.

Assuming that the failure to boot is because recovering the partition structure failed, is this because the required information is missing from the backup (tib) file or present but corrupted, and if so, is there anything that can be done to examine the backup file to determine which of these is the case, and can something be done to correct this part of the backup file ?

Les, welcome to these User Forums.

Given that your system failed to load in the first place leading to your attempt at recovering from your latest backup, I would suspect that there may be an underlying drive issue that you need to resolve first.

If you have a Windows 10 install media (DVD or USB stick) that you can boot from, then try to get to a command prompt and perform a full format of your target drive where you are trying to recover to?  Format as a single partition and then do a CHKDSK /R for the same.  (Do not have your backup drive connected while doing this to avoid any errors and formatting the wrong drive!  Also if you have more than one drive, disconnect all but the OS drive).

You may also want to go to your disk drive manufacturers support site and download any diagnostic utilities they provide for doing a full check of the drive that way.

Thank you for your reply. I bought my laptop with Windows 8.1 Home pre-installed and performed the free upgrade to Windows 10 Home , therefore I do not have a Windows 10 installation disk or bootable media.

I am going to purchase Windows 10 Home or Professional on DVD or USB flash drive sometime in the next week or so, and I will post here again to let you know the outcome.

Les, there should be no need for you to go out and 'purchase Windows 10 Home or Professional on DVD or USB flash drive' if your laptop has already been activated for Windows 10 as this is now based on the hardware signature of the laptop, so you can install the same version of Windows 10 and it will be automatically activated again.

Steve, I clicked on the Microsoft link as you suggested, and I have successfully created Windows 10 Installation Media on a 'USB Flash Drive' which is actually a 16GB SD Card inserted into a Kingston USB 3.0 card reader - my laptop booted ok from this, and I have successfully installed Windows 10.
