Build 6029 hangs Windows 7

Thread needs solution

Colin,

I'm using just the built in Windows firewall. I have two nVidia graphics cards running 3 monitors. Drivers should be up to date within a couple of months.

I have been using Acronis products since 2006. I, too, have noticed that the product is going downhill.

I installed True Image Home 2010 build 7046 with the Plus Pack on my Windows XP sp2 system. At first the timed backups did not seem to be working and there was an error message. I wrote to Tech Support.

The technician, if that is what it was, said I had to uninstall the software, download a fresh copy, and re-install. There was no attempt to use the information I provided to arrive at a possible solution. I wrote back and asked some questions. I never got a reply.

I wrote a few days later to both Sales and Service advising that I thought their tech support was terrible. I have not heard from anyone. No one likes to be in a vacuum. Vacuums suck.

The next day I discovered that the timed backup was working and it has been ever since. I never did the re-install; I just waited a day and the problem cleared.

Last week I re-formatted the disk and installed Windows 7 Home Premium. Most of my software runs very well and my data is all back. Windows 7 has been running beautifully with virtually no trouble. Well almost no trouble.

The day after Windows 7 did an update I installed TIH 2010. Shortly thereafter I started having troubles with Adobe Flash 10.1 and IE8. Flash continually wanted to be re-installed. According to thousands of hits on Google this is not uncommon. The problem changed from the browser crashing to one of the machine not responding for 5 minutes at a crack. At the same time the NIC and some sound features were also not working.

A check of Google showed that Flash and IE8 and Windows 7 64 bit did not like each other. I switched to the 32 bit browser and all seemed OK. Then I read that the drivers for some sound chips, one of which I had, could cause a problem. Windows had updated that driver so I rolled it back. That seemed to help, for a few hours.

When the system became totally unusable I installed Google Chrome and again it was working. I could even view videos without Flash. That was great, but only for a short while. Chrome started hanging the system. To make matters more fun attempts to roll Windows back prior to the critical updates failed.

I disabled the Acronis services and rebooted. Now the system works with either browser and I am not having problems with crashes. Sound is up and running and the NIC is happy again.

The only thing I can figure is that Acronis is causing a problem.

Up to this point I have been heartily recommending Acronis products. Seeing all the unhappy postings here, with only one reply from Dmitri, and given the horrible experiences I have had with their current tech support staff, I don't know that I can recommend this product any more.

That is a shame because when it works it does a terrific job. But lately it does not seem to be working so well and there is no one to call or write for assistance. E-mails from tech support telling me to start over without asking any questions are not satisfactory.

Someone made a comment about Acronis being a Russian product.  I have  worked with several Russian programmers and they have been top notch.  Production and tech support can be in Russia or India or the Philippines or about anywhere else.  I really don't care, as long as the product is well supported.

Unfortunately, Acronis is no longer well supported.  Any comments from Acronis will be appreciated.

Please explain more about SnapAPI.

Your tech support robot told me to download it but did not explain what it did or how to install it. They also wanted me to download a reporting module in case I needed it.

This tech never replied to my e-mail and as far as I know he / she / it never existed. The reply I got looked like a canned response, promising me excellent service and apologizing for my troubles and then telling me to remove True Image Home 2010, download a new copy, and then re-install it.

I have installed TIH 2010 build 7046 with the plus pack and it all but destroyed Windows 7, as explained in another posting.

If SnapAPI will fix the problem I am all ears. But when a tech tells me to download it and then won't tell me what to do with it, let's just say that does not make me very happy.

. . ... and take some comfort in knowing that you do have the right attitude and these 90's generation kids
. . don't understand quality work and settle for the crap companies like Acronis sell. Remember the motto
. . that used to be over the entrance to every Sears in their days of glory-"Customer Satisfaction is Guaranteed."
. . It was the software crowd that created 'terms of use."

A ship yard in Norfolk VA had a sign over the door that read, "We build good ships, at a profit if we can, at a loss if we must. But we build good ships". After the new management took over the sign quickly came down.

The current crop of whiz kids out of college want instant gratification without doing any work for it. They grew up with Nintendos and iPods, not typewriters and a work ethic. They seem to love setting up those horrid voice-only phone systems and other hi-tech monstrosities that befuddle and vex so many people.

If it is any consolation, the prior crop of acid dropping, grass smoking hippies is now running Congress. I don't want to think what it will be like when the video game crowd is in charge.

Ah, the Exatron Stringly Floppy. That was quite a system. I think it was basically a tape based floppy drive.

Remember the 3-1/4" floppy? It was like a 5-1/4" floppy but smaller. It was not plastic; it was cardboard, just like its bigger cousins.

My first computer was a Vector Graphic MZ. It had 48k of memory (yes, K, as in smaller than today's keyboard chips) and two Micropolis 298k floppies.

In those days the BBS was the only way to go. Of course you had to know the speed, parity, and stop bits for each board but that made all that much more challenging.

Dear Mr. Frost:

If you really are interested in improving your products and maintaining customer satisfaction, take a close look at your customer support staff.

To be blunt about it: You don't have any technical support. The only way to find out what is wrong with Acronis is through Google and this forum and replies from Acronis people here are not exactly timely.

Within a few days of buying your TIH 2010 product Build 7046 with the add-on pack I opened a case. I was told to uninstall the product, download a fresh copy, and re-install. There was no trouble shooting or any type of support.

I was also told to download something called Snap API and a reporting tool. I was not told what either of them did or when I should use them. My reply to the support person's e-mail has remained unanswered for weeks.

Acronis causes my Windows 7 system to hang mercilessly. Only after I shut down the Acronis services and rebooted could I use the computer for anything.

There is much that is good about Acronis products. When they fail there is no way to get support for them and that outweighs the good the product may do. I like your products. I would like to continue using them. But without support for them I can not recommend them or use them.

This cleanup utility sounds a bit like Norton Anti-Virus.

There must be a few dozen tools for cleaning out the Registry and actually getting that monstrosity off the computer. I have uninstalled a number of other such products and never had this sort of problem. Peter Norton is a fine man. What has happened to the products that bear his name is not so fine.

So now Acronis is doing the same thing?

Hello everyone,

I want to thank everyone for their feedback. We are constantly trying to improve our software and our support.

I would like to assure everyone, that the fix suggested in the following article - Acronis True Image Home 2010 Freezes Windows Vista or Windows 7 Operating System - resolves the issue with freezing Windows Vista or Windows 7. However, if there are any exceptions, please submit a support request with the following report, so that our experienced support engineers can assist you.

Close but no cigar.

I purchased TIH 2010 Build 7046 and installed it on a new Windows 7 system.  Since then the system has hung horrible, taking 5 minutes to perform some functions.  The NIC was disabled.  The sound card stopped working properly.

Tech Support said to remove the product, download a fresh copy, and re-install.  They also provided SnapAPI 545 and a reporting program but did not tell me what to do with them.  E-mail to them has not been replied to.

My new Windows 7 was working very nicely until Acronis came along.  I have disabled the Acronis services and my computer is working once again.

I guess I am out $70 for the product and the add-on package.  Build 7046 was supposed to be the ultimate fix.  It doesn't work.

FarStone? Isn't that a company what sells tars up here in the hills?

I looked at their Website and see some disturbing things. They make all sorts of wonderful claims. Then at one point they mention the steps to take if you want to back up network shares. The English leaves much to be desired, and much to the imagination.

Why can´t I see computer list in &My Network Places” when I want to back up or restore from a network shared folder within Recovery Manager? What should I do?
1. We recommend you change the workgroup name of computers to default name “Workgroup”. And then program will list all computers automatically.
2. Or, if you don’t want to modify existing workgroup name, please map the shared folders by follow below instructions:
a. Click “Map Network Drive” on “Network” tab bar.
b. Enter the location of shared folder, user name, and password on input box.
c. If the computer you want to connect to is on a domain, you would enter the domain name, user name, and password. For example: domain\username.
d.If you are connecting to a computer in a workgroup, you would enter the remote computer name an user name. For example: remote_computer_name\username.
e. After mapping network drives, you can save your back image to a network folder.

Robert, it might be better if you started your own thread, seeing as how you have build 7046 and this thread was originally dealing with build 6029.

Your references to replies elsewhere (I assume in this thread) are also difficult to follow after all there are over 350 posts lurking here. So your 7 posts might get lost.

You are right about the posts lurking here. I have been on here for hours learning that I am not along in my grief with Acronis.

I realize that Windows 7 is a new product that will have new challenges. But the common thread here is one of terrible support from Acronis.

That is very distressing. I like the product. I have recommended it to many people. I have it installed on all of my own computers. But with no viable support it becomes a risky proposition to keep it.

E-mails in pidgin English from are a problem. It is far worse when the sender will not reply to a follow-up message. That can be the kiss of death for a company.

Acronis is now on sale at the Micro Center. It is unknown by much of the staff and reviled by some of it. That is not a good way for Acronis to improve the bottom line.

How do I STOP getting emails when replies are posted to this thread! I have tried everything but there is no way to stop them!

I have uninstalled ATI 11. After installation of the program my computer started " beeping' ( Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit) Sometime just a single beep, sometimes a double beep, after reinstalling ATI 10 the beeping stopped, so I know it was ATI 11 that caused it. Is anyone else having these problems?

Beeping - might be due to the CPU having a high load and getting hotter than a trip figure. Did you notice the CPU fan going or faster or sounding louder?
