TrueImage 2018 starts, backup starts, but system 'freezes' partway through - all USB activity blocked and backup 'dies'

Thread needs solution

Trying to back up my disks (≈1.2 TB) to an external USB drive (≈ 4.5 TB free)

Backup proceeds, but MUCH more slowly than previous Acronis backups (ETA is ≈ 1 Day, 12 Hours, vs 6 Hours from previous experiences)

About 12-14 hours in, ALL USB activity is blocked - no mouse, keyboard, and all external USB drives become unavailable - which is problematical because the destination is on an external USB drive...

Acronis reports that it needs more disk space (because it apparently lost connectivity to the external USB drive) but there's PLENTY of room on the (unavailable) external USB drive

System is a Dell XPS 15 L521X, 16GB Ram, 125GB SSD, 2TB Hard Drive

OS is Windows 10 Pro - Fully Patched as of 1/8/2018

Con,

Since you are using a laptop you probably are having a Power Plan issue with Windows and how it handles USB devices.  You would need to change your poser plan settings so that such devices are not powered down or managed by Windows so that the device can remain online to complete the backup task.

Con, see forum topic: True Image 2018 - constantly fails to recognize external USB Hard Drive which was for a similar issue as you report here.
