rescue media builder fails to create

Thread needs solution

Cheryl, when you say this failed, was there any error message shown?

Please download the MVP Log Viewer tool (from the Community Tools link below), and use this to check the TI_Media_Builder log file contents for error messages.

I would also suggest trying to create an ISO file version of the Rescue Media to eliminate any issues with your DVD drive or optical media.

I just had a similar experience trying to create a rescue drive on a flash drive.

Attempted the simple method first. Not only did it fail, but it apparently corrupted the thumb drive. When I exited the rescue drive builder and attempted to open the thumb drive to see what was there, I was told it had been corrupted and was now unreadable.

No big deal because it's a new drive with nothing on it I really wanted anyway. Reformatted the drive. No harm, no foul, I guess, although utilities like this shouldn't do things like corrupting drives, don't you think?

I downloaded MVP Log Viewer as you suggested above, but there were no log files to view or download.

Not ready to give up just yet, I tried again except I used the Advanced builder this time:

Choose

Rescue Media Builder

Advanced

Win PE-based media

Windows Recovery Environment

Testing now to see if this created a bootable drive.

Mark, welcome to these User Forums.

What size of USB drive are you using here?

ScanDisk 32 GB, USB 3.0

I plugged it back in, restarted, but it didn't start from the thumb drive. How do I force it to start from the thumb drive (or any other external drive, for that matter).

Just for kicks, I reformatted the thumb drive again, and successfully created a bootable drive using the Simple method.

Apparently there's something pre-loaded on the thumb drive that doesn't play well with ATI.

Just a tidbit here, the simple Rescue media by default uses WinRE on your computer and does not need the WinPE ADK package installed to create media.  There are times when WinRE may have an issue such being corrupted, not being in the proper location on disk, or missing entirely.

If you have issues with creating Simple rescue media you should try creating a Windows Recovery disc/drive from within Windows - Control Panel- System and Security - Backup and Restore - Create a system repair disc.  If you cannot create a Windows System Repair disc then you likely have a WinRE issue.

Mark, please see the ATIH 2018 User Guide: Making sure that your rescue media can be used when needed for initial information for your question below:

How do I force it to start from the thumb drive (or any other external drive, for that matter).

You can also do this via the Windows 10 Settings panel > Update & Security > Recovery > Advanced start-up.

Steve,

That worked.

I now have a bootable ATI 2018 flash drive.

Now to crawl into the BIOS and do a little editing to make it recognize bootable external media.

Thank you!

It turns out that simply installing the thumb drive with ATI boot media with the laptop off, then hitting the power button, then F12 repeatedly gets me to a startup screen with the option to boot from external media. That's the simple startup option I was looking for.

Mark, the F12 key at boot is known for some makes of laptop such as Dell and some others. Other keys can include F11, Del, Esc etc, and on some such as Lenovo, you have to push the end of a paper clip into a small hole to trigger similar options!

This is one area where having a common approach among the PC makers would be great but am not holding my breath!
