How to gain access privileges to restored files
Hi All,
I have been trying to access files that were backed up from a Windows XP system and restored to a Windows 7 system using TI 2010. However, all of the restored folders, sub-folders, and files do not have access privileges.
I understand there are ways to change the security setting for files in Windows 7. However, doing this for every restored folder, sub-folder, and file would be complicated, and totally impractical.
There has to be a more practical solution to this problem. At this stage, I can't even delete the unusable files that have been restored on my Windows 7 computer.
Please provide some help to solve this issue.
Thx.
Ron

Hello Alexander,
I have the same problem in that one folder inexplicably has been copied from VISTA to Windows 7 and now I am unable to open it.
I followed your steps as best I could. In my copy of TI 2010, step 2. actually refers to :"File Recovery Options". Both boxes - "recover files with original settings" as well as "set current date and time" were blank. I reovered it to the desktop, the recovered file was in green font and I receiced the error message "user does not have access privileges". By the way, I validated the archive beforehand. I repeated the same process with a score of other backups with the same results.
I then followed your link to Article 308421. This refers to Windows XP, while I am running Windows 7. By the way, one of the first things I did was go to properties of the file, Security Tab> Advanced>Owner>Administrator. Still - "user does not have access privileges".
I downloaded a program called "GrantAdminFullControl.reg. That did not help.
This security overkill by Windows for a stand alone computer is very frustrating and time consuming. Do you have any other suggestions on steps that I could take?
Thanks

What is the resolution on this problem? I've got the same behaviour. The backedup image is fine and when the restore files/folder process is completed with Acronis TI 2010 on a Windows 7 machine, I get the error message with regard to not having the privilege to open the files.
I've installed the 7046 build but still get the same problem.

There is another way to assign files and folders to your current login.
Right click on the file or folder, select properties and then click on the security tab. Make a note of your log in identifier from the Group\User name list.
Click on the Advance button. From the permissions form that appears ensure the 'Inherit parent objects....' option is ticked. Click on ADD. type in your user name as noted from a previous step, double check it by clicking on 'Search'. If all is OK, OK out of the box, depending on how many files and folders are being attached to your current SID depends how long it will take.
You should now be able to access all your files.

Thanks for the reply, but I already know that step.
To quote the OP:

If it is only one file, or one folder, the workaround might be ok, but in my case, as with the OP, I've got too many files and subfolders to be doing this one at a time.
BTW, I've found out that if I manually check the "preserve privileges" on, followed by off, and then do the restore, then TI 2010 does the correct procedure, that is, I get to access the files/folders without any trouble.

I wasn't as clear as I thought.
It it true you will need to perform the above on each root folder. but so long as the 'inherit' box is ticked all the sub and contents will be included.

And I thought I WAS CLEAR enough. I know how to change the privilege access for files/folders. It is NOT an acceptable solution. I purchased TI 2010 to do the restore job correctly, not for me to have to manually patch the restore for each "root" folder and files.
Please do read the post and avoid unnecessary chatter.
