save all back ups? (complete newbee)

Thread needs solution

Hi

As a complete newbee i have a question. Do all back ups need to be kept? At first i made a full back up : _full_b1_s1_v1 after that numerous backups followed till _inc_b1_s44_v1. Do all backups need to be kept in order to run a back up if needed?

Thanks for your answers in advance

wp, welcome to these User Forums.

If you are creating an Incremental backup version chain, which looks to be the case, then YES all the backups are needed as removing any will break the version chain at that point forward.

If you are already up to incremental file s44 in the chain, you may want to reconsider the size of the chain.

My preference is to keep the number of incremental files to a reasonable number then to create a new Full backup and start over with a new version chain.  This also allows for using automatic cleanup to remove the oldest version chains and allow space to create new ones.

If you have chosen a Backup Scheme which only creates Incremental files after the initial Full backup, then you will need to keep every file for as long as the chain continues!

It is a high risk strategy to have a high number of incremental backups. I usually limit the number to 5. If there is a problem with one of the incremental backups all subsequent incremental backups are rendered useless.

PS About a year ago my mother-in-law had problems with her PC. Many years ago when I set it up for her I installed ATI 2014. When I went to do the recovery the incremental backups were over 50, and it worked. (There was also a separate monthly backup with chain limited to 5 incrementals so all was not lost if it did not work.)

Thank you both for your answers. I will create a new full back up and i shall reduce the periods for the incremental back up

Thanks again
