Can I clone with RAID disk error (0)

Thread needs solution

Hi, my Vaio Z1 with a Samsung SSD has started to report an error on startup. This is showing up in the Intel Rapid Storage Technology boot screen for port 4: "Error Occurred (0)"

Will I be able to clone this drive?

Jonathan, welcome to these User Forums.

I would strongly advise you to make a full Disk & Partitions backup of your Samsung SSD drive as soon as possible if you are seeing any form of errors for the drive being reported.

Backup of the drive, even performed from within an active Windows OS, is a safer process than attempting to clone the same drive, and will give you a backup image (.tib) file that you can use to recover your system to a new drive should the Samsung SSD fail completely.

If you have not already done so, I would also strongly advise you to create the Acronis bootable Rescue media so that you have this available should you need to recover your computer (after creating a full backup image).

See KB 59877: Acronis True Image 2017: how to distinguish between UEFI and Legacy BIOS boot modes of Acronis Bootable Media where this is very important to boot the Acronis Rescue Media in the same BIOS mode as used by your Windows OS.

To check the BIOS mode used by Windows, run the command msinfo32 and then look at the BIOS Mode field shown in the right side panel.  This will show either UEFI or Legacy.

Thanks indeed for that excellent and detailed advice. I've followed all of your suggestions and now just have to hope that my Vaio works OK after I switch to a non-RAID disk and then restore from my backup (which I'm updating daily!)

Well the replacement SSD finally arrived. Its twice the capacity of the failing one.

I've restored using the full disk and partitions method. That's worked well, but I now have an unused 230GB partition. My preference would be to combine the C partition and the spare one, but that's not possible it seems (this is windows 10).

Any suggestions? Would doing a restore using the 'files and folders' method be a better option?

 

Jonathan, if your new SSD has been restored and is working well apart from the unused 230GB partition, then I would use a partition tool such as the free MiniTool Partition Wizard tool to make any further changes to partition sizes, merge partitions etc.

Great advice Steve. A nice tool that! I just had to delete a recovery partition and extend the C partition.

Like Steve I use MiniTool to adjust partition sizes when replacing with a larger SSD to get partitions to the size I want.
